Chad Johnson gets 30 days in jail for probation violation

Posted by Mike Florio on June 10, 2013, 11:36 AM EDT

Not since Vincent LaGuardia Gambini found himself repeatedly in contempt has the lack of courtroom decorum had such dire consequences.

According to Local10.com, former NFL receiver Chad Johnson appeared in court today in connection with allegations that he violated probation by failing to keep in touch with his probation officer. Though prosecutors initially wanted Johnson to be jailed for the infraction, a plea deal was reached.

Under the terms of the agreement, Johnson’s probation would have been extended to December 21, and he would have performed 25 hours of community service.

“You better thank your lawyer. He did a great job for you,” Broward Circuit Court Judge Kathleen McHugh told Johnson after accepting the agreement.

Johnson responded by slapping attorney Adam Swickle on the butt. Which prompted the judge to call the whole thing off.

She believed Johnson wasn’t taking the situation seriously, so she rejected the plea deal and sentenced him to 30 days in jail.

Johnson pleaded no contest last year to battery of his wife, who has since divorced him. He was cut by the Dolphins in the aftermath of the arrest.

The good news is that he’ll be free in time for training camp. The bad news is that there isn’t, and won’t be, a training camp to attend.

Bottom line is you're already in court for a probation violation, which you normally do time for anyway.

You better be on your best goddamn behavior.

Chad's just a ****ing clown.

How absurd. Total abuse of power. If he deserves 30 days for what he did then give him 30 days. Instead, she proudly makes known that justice is at her whim.

She's just pissed because people were laughing in her court room. I'm sure she's sensitive about the thing turning into a circus. I've done similar shit in front of the classroom.

"Everybody in the court room was laughing!"

She feels like they're laughing at her, so she freaks.

No kidding.

I feel bad for him. He's a naturally optimistic guy who tries to find humor in situations. That's all he was doing, and in fact that trait probably makes him less of a threat to people than a guy who's all stone-faced.

Could be worse. He could serve his time in a Iranian prison.
I'd rather not have a justice system that doesn't have to compare ourselves to Iran in order to look reasonable by comparison.

Do we really need to lock people in cages for this kind of shit? Does this swat make him such a danger to society that he needs to be imprisoned?

It's sad at just how quickly I am losing my faith in my country. I've always defended the US because I honestly believed that, even when we were wrong, we had the best of intentions. I'm not sure this is the case any longer.
