Options at Safety this offseason

Yeah, I'm still pissed off at Lewis. Like everyone else, I can't wait to see his sorry ass off this team. But looking forward, who can we replace him with?

Haha Clinton-Dix is the only real option in the draft, and he'll be gone by our pick.

Here are the FA Safeties

Nate Allen PHI
Yeremiah Bell ARI
Antoine Bethea IND
Jarius Byrd BUF
Ryan Clark PIT
Chris Crocker CIN
TJ Ward CLE
Michael Huff DEN
Malcolm Jenkins NO
Taylor Mays CIN
Brandon Merriweather WAS
Quinten Mikell CAR
Donte Whitner SF
Usama Young OAK

Anyone think we can snag one of those guys? Will we have the money?

On a related note, and not that you'd do it now, but possibly down the road, would be Brandon Flowers at FS. He's always been a sure tackler, playing nickel and even in the past at corner he's been a + guy at rushing the passer. I think he could do a fantastic job playing out of that spot and having full survey of the field and play in front of him.

Ed Reed?

I had to stop reading at that point.

Reed is DONNNEEE. I mean done. He can't run, tackle, or cover. He looks like the shell of the shell of himself.

I dunno, he is a sure tackler and he would be relatively quick for a safety, but there haven't been many successful 5'9 190 safeties iirc... Dawkins and Sanders are the only ones that come to mind.

And they were both heavier than 190, i'm not too big on this idea.

Ward seems like the most viable option. Byrd is gonna want a fortune and Ward is the youngest out of them and could come cheap. He's only making $660,000 this year.

That is probably because it is the last year of his rookie contract. He will not be getting a HUGE deal but he will get pretty good money. I think T.J. Ward is out of our price range. Him and Byrd are the best Safeties on the market this off season.

Lets assume Dix is gone by the time we pick and that we wont have the cap space for a top free agent safety, of the guys on this list who would you all want?

The interesting thing to me about this crop is that there isn't a single player over 210 pounds, a whole buncha smallish guys this year...

Which means Denver will sign at least one of those 2 guys....

That's the way of the league. Speed kills, baby.

I think that size is overrated anyway. I don't think Berry even hits 210 and he's a hell of an enforcer.

Draft Dion Bailey. Put him at SS. Move Berry to FS.

Bailey is a safety who used to play LB. He fits Berry's current role perfectly. Berry then gets to utilize his speed and instincts as a ball hawk.

From the list of free agent safeties...does Michael Huff still have anything left? He was a very good athlete coming out of Texas and playing for Oakland. He failed in Baltimore and he hasn't done much in Denver. Could KC get him for a low cost contract and give him a chance to turn it around?

I still think they should draft one in the middle rounds but maybe Huff could be a low cost alternative.
