People have asked me why we’re not more emotional,” Matheny said in his office after Sunday’s game. “They say that we look subdued, always intense. That our actions are methodical, robotic at times. That’s what got us here. This isn’t the time to change it.”

It’s hard to argue with the manager’s assessment. The Cardinals finished with 97 victories, most by a Cards team since 2005, and tied with Boston for No. 1 in the majors this year.


Their 54-27 showing at Busch Stadium matches the 1985 team for the best single-season home winning percentage (.667) by the Cardinals since 1944.

A postseason theme has emerged, and it echoes the mantra that surfaced before the start of 2013: remember the fall of 2012. Remember falling to San Francisco in the NLCS.


The Cardinals’ veterans still haven’t forgotten. They still aren’t over it. It’s why Matheny resists GM John Mozeliak’s urgings to smile and put on a happier face.


Here's the most impressive aspect of the Cardinals' division championship: they prevailed over two other outstanding teams, Pittsburgh and Cincinnati.



The 97-win Cardinals were better this year (regular season) than they were in 2011, when they won 90 games, and 2012, when they won 88.
Here are a few numbers that help put the Cardinals' Central title and No. 1 NL seed in perspective:



* Since MLB switched to a three-division format in each league in 1994, this was only the sixth time that a division had three 90-plus win teams. St. Louis won 97, Pittsburgh 94, and Cincinnati 90.
* Since the format change, this was only the second time that an NL division had three 90-win teams. In 2002 the NL West had Arizona (98 wins), San Francisco (95) and Los Angeles (92).
* The 2013 Cardinals faced more esteemed and difficult competition at the top of the division than any of the division-winning teams managed by Tony La Russa.

The Pirates were hardly pushovers; the Cardinals had to work like mad and kick in with a strong finish to put the division away, and didn't clinch until Game No. 160.



The Cardinals went 9-10 against Pittsburgh this season and were 11-8 vs. Cincinnati.


The Cardinals won only three of 10 games at PNC Park in Pittsburgh and split the 10 games at Cincinnati. The Cardinals were 6-3 against both teams at Busch Stadium.


The Cardinals (1st), Pirates (3rd) and Reds (5th) ranked among the top five in wins in the NL. The three teams were among the top 11 in wins in MLB. All three teams finished in the top five in the majors for best overall ERA, and each were in the top five MLB for best starting-pitching ERA.


The original purpose to this piece was to point out that the Cardinals managed to finish with the league's best record while competing in a division that had three 90-win teams for only the second time in the last 19 years of National League baseball.



The Cardinals really earned this.

I think 99% of the fanbase just gets rock hard when he comes in throwing gas from the 'pen and they're just aghast by the idea of moving him to the rotation.

But !@#$ me running, the kid was a starter his entire damn career. He has a legitimate 3-pitch arsenal and can actually hit the outside corner with his heat. Hell, he can power it down in the zone and maintain velocity.

It's incredibly rare that you get a kid that can do that with the power that he has, especially with a changeup that gets the armside run that his does.

If nothing else, he absolutely has to be given the chance to fail there first. His value as a starter pitcher could potentially be through the roof. Meanwhile, we're getting dynamite relief work out of Edwards Mujica and if he hasn't been the best closer in the NL this year, Jason !@#$ing Grilli has been.

Closers are much much easier to find than trained starters that can throw 100 mph with a 3 pitch arsenal.

I just checked out one of their forums (that I stumbled upon last year when looking for trade hilarity). One of their "better" posters said the following earlier this week:

I've also written this a bunch of times, but the O's best trade chip remains Jim Johnson once he reestablishes himself following his rough patch. For a team like the Rangers, where Feldman might be expendable, sending them Jim Johnson potentially could get us Feldman and Olt (thereby solving our 3b issues for the next six years or so). Just a thought.

Lot of hilarity there.

First, the thought that the Rangers would trade Mike Olt straight up for Jim Johnson is pretty hilarious. Second, Scott Feldman doesn't play for Texas.

Oh, no. He's staying in KC. Though if Herrera rebounds, I wouldn't blink at trading Holland if it helps the team obtain a good long-term piece (SP or everyday player).

In the Orioles fans' defense there, the Rangers have shown a willingness to cut bait on struggling sluggers (even guys with strong pedigrees) for setup men in the past.

Chris Davis and Tommy Hunter for Uehara worked out nicely for the O's, did it not?

Then they traded two of their best pitching prospects for Mike Adams to boot...

Xavier Avery/LJ Hoes + Jake Arrieta for Matt Garza also being floated. I imagine Epstein is smart enough to realize he'd be better off letting Garza walk after making a qualifying offer and taking the comp pick than making that trade...

That's really the thing with O's fans - they think the rest of baseball is really stupid or has been in a coma for 5 years.

Jake Arrieta, several seasons of results be damned, will always be the hotshot Arrieta that O's fans expected him to be a 1/2 decade ago.

They believe that their prospects simply do not lose their shine to the rest of MLB and that they're in on some secret that perhaps Theo is unaware of.

Matt Riley and Adam Loewen will forever be the poster boys of this particular mindset. They were making those guys the centerpieces of blockbuster trades right up until their releases from AAA.

Looks like Arrieta is their new guy. If Britton doesn't get his shit in order, he'll be the key piece of many a Mike Trout trade offer in 3 years...

Cubs fans did the same when they had a top farm system (according to "experts") a few years back. Remember Felix Pie, Bobby Hill, Hee Sop Choi, Corey Patterson, etc.? They were all considered untradable by their fans; pretty much all busts.

Meh, most of the guys I was highest on as Cardinals prospects at that time either turned out to be marginal big leaguers or outright busts (Hi Brian Anderson, you ****).

What's funny is that the system was loaded with guys like Jay, Freese, and Craig who were far lesser names than Rasmus but have turned out to be better ballplayers.
