Now, of course everyone wants to win football games. I want KU to win them too. I just realize the difficulty of competing with the South which for the Big 12, is 60% of the league residing in Oklahoma and Texas. West Virginia found out the hard way that football wins are rare in places where they care about it.

At any rate, with St Louis and KC both having NFL teams I think Mizzou is in a really tough spot generating the fan interest & the income to run with the big dogs down there. Where those teams have little to no competition. I'd say Arky & South Carolina are better long term bets since they have no NFL team close by. Missouri does lack an NBA team in either city. Since one could look at KU and see why that matters so much, I'd think Mizzou would eventually realize it too.
MU is probably the 10th best job in the league depending on how you view South Carolina. The challenge is enormous. But the school has some things going for it. It's the flagship school in a state that produces a decent amount of talent, and doesn't have to divy it up w/ an in state little brother. It's possible to win to some extent there. They shouldn't quit trying but should have realistic expectations.

Mizzou is a basketball school. Not a very successful one, but yes...a basketball school.

And by most accounts they are proud of it.

Are there Mizzou fans that don't work and camp out for weeks at a time in the team's parking lot before a game?

Cause from what I heard people in the SEC actually do that.

Teams in the SEC get better players and better coaches because the SEC is the only conference that matters in college football. That's why SEC fans pimp their own conference. SEC success helps all of the teams (and hurts the rest of the conferences).

Just look at Big 12 recruiting. The best class in the Big 12 for next year is Oklahoma...at 13-15 depending on the site doing the rankings. That would be 8th best in the SEC. Ole Miss just locked up the #2 recruiting class in the country. Meanwhile, KSU came in at #56 despite being the class of the Big 12. The worst class in the SEC came in at #39...and they're the defending national champions in basketball... Must suck to be them, right Wickedson?

Weeks? No. That wouldn't really make much sense, now would it? They would be missing games in order to camp out for games...but they take it pretty seriously.

Baton Rouge -- If fans are wishing to go to what might be the most-hyped game in college football's regular season, they're going to need to empty their wallet -- and maybe part of their savings.
les_miles_tigers.jpgScott Threlkeld/The Times-PicayuneThe LSU football team takes on Alabama in the biggest game of the college football season.

No. 1 LSU and No. 2 Alabama will clash Nov. 5 in a game that may decide one representative in the BCS Championship game.

With a little less than a week and a half remaining until game time, and with the buzz growing louder as the game approaches, ticket prices are going through the roof. The cheapest ticket on ticket website Stubhub.com -- at a spot in the upper bowl of Alabama's Bryant Denny stadium -- is going for $389. The ticket retails for $70.

Meanwhile, tickets in the lower level of the North end zone are priced as high as $5,000.

In comparison, tickets for the 2011 SEC Championship game in Atlanta on Dec. 3, are available on Stubhub.com for as little as $363, with the most expensive ticket costing $1,500.

Using the same site, tickets for Game 6 of the World Series between the Cardinals and the Rangers start at $270 for standing-room-only spots.

LSU Coach Les Miles was his usual, joker self when asked what he was going to do with his allotment of tickets for LSU's most glorified regular-season matchup in recent memory.

"I am out of the ticket business. I married my wife, I got out of the ticket business," Miles said. "She is responsible. All I say to anybody that calls me at any point in time about any game is, 'Yeah, absolutely.' Then say to (my assistant or my wife), 'Can we do that?' and not worry about it."

Miles has a sideline view of the game, but fans looking to get into the stadium had to plan in advance.

The LSU ticket office said they dispersed the allotment of 7,000 tickets to season-ticket holders and students in July, and fans now are having a tough time trying to make a late purchase.

"If I was really looking for one now, I probably wouldn't be able to get one," said Panay Burland, a kindergarten teacher and Alabama alumna.

Burland is making the trek from Baton Rouge to Tuscaloosa to root for her hometown team. As a Bama fan in Tigerland, Burland is relishing the opportunity to go home and cheer on the Tide.

Luckily for Burland, her friends in Tuscaloosa were able to reserve a ticket for her before the hype machine took over. Burland said she still would have gone to Tuscaloosa, even if she wasn't able to find a ticket.

Many LSU fans are doing just that.

David Burford, a senior at LSU, is making the trip to Tuscaloosa without a ticket. While he said he has made trips to football games without a ticket before, he isn't sure it's going to work out for him this time. Burford is hoping to score a ticket for well below the asking price of ticket websites.

"I've done it before, but never for something this big," Burford said. "I've done it for some not as high profile games and concerts. I don't really know if I'll be able to get a ticket, but if not, I'll watch the game at a bar."

No. I'll wait until some banker 60 years from now declares me the national champion for 2013. Then I'll hang a banner.

Kansas fans should camp out before their games against FCS teams. It's pretty much their only chance to see an actual win.

You typically need to win games.

Losing in the first round and missing bowl games are not the direction you want to be heading.

Not to my knowledge. This is clearly a discussion based off subjective criteria but I don't consider that to be an indicator or evidence of much of anything. I can also show you SEC stadiums at football powers such as Florida and UT that had empty seats for multiple games this season but that doesn't make them any less of football schools and in UF's case has nothing to to with wins and losses.

Fair enough. The obsession with 19 year olds playing football by SEC fans fascinates me. I never really saw Mizzou as one of those schools. Was curious since the move to the SEC and this year's performance to see if the fan base was becoming as driven as these other places.

I don't see any of that from any of my MU friends. They were excited about the move initially but a terrible football debut and a last place recruiting class has dampened the spirits a bit.
