2013 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread

Proposed 2013 Slogan: Tigers: They're what's for dinner
Actual 2013 Slogan: Come to Play
A better, more accurate, or alternative slogan: All in, no panic, we promise.

Dayton Moore has pushed all his chips in and is riding on King/Jack suited, hoping it comes together, he gets some good luck, and he hits the nuts by the river card. There's potential, oh yes, there's potential. There's also risk.

At the midway point, Dayton is left counting on the river card. The flop and turn didn't help him, and he's looking at the Tigers holding a pair of Queens and the Indians holding a pair of 9s. His 2013 plan hasn't failed - yet - but the odds are not in his favor.

Burning questions updates below.

Burning Questions for 2013:

1) Will the improve rotation be improved enough? Does James Shields pitch like a fringe No. 1 away from Tampa Bay? Does Ervin Santana pitch to his highest upside in his walk year? Can Jeremy Guthrie build on his strong performance as a Royal in 2012? Can Wade Davis bring his new mentality- and velocity - back to the rotation?

Midseason check-in: Yes, the rotation is certainly improved enough. Shields has pitched like a fringe No. 1 and Santana is having his best season. Guthrie has horrible peripherals but has continued to perform well at his home park and eat innings on the road. Davis brought neither his kick-ass mentality or improved velocity back to the rotation and is in Luke Hochevar/Hiram Davies territory.

2) When will Luke Hochevar be shown the door?
Midseason check-in: It appears, never, at this point. Hochevar has been solid in non-leverage situations, though pretty much every time he has been used with men on base in an inning, it has been a disaster.

3) Does Hosmer bounce back?
Midseason check-in: It took some time, but Hosmer's performance from June 1 on is probably the most encouraging thing about the 2013 season so far.
4) Can Moustakas hit for a whole season like he did in the first half of 2012?
Midseason check-in: Nope. Moustakas was god-awful, then great for about 3 weeks, then god-awful again. He has been better since he started working with Brett and Grafol but still has a long way to go.
5) Who regresses?
Midseason check-in: Welp, Alicides Escobar is not a surprising name here (though Yost's stubborn insistence on hitting him second is ridiculous). Billy Butler is a surprise. He isn't having a terrible year - still contributing a lot to the offense - but he's not hitting for the average or power he has displayed over the past several years.
6) Who plays 2B?
Midseason check-in: A whole bunch of people, and not that great. Gio is at least getting a shot, though he once again is not doing much with it.
7) Can Jeff Francoeur be at least replacement level, rather than epic horrible level?
Midseason check-in: Hahahahahahahahahahaha
8) Will Dayton Moore survive to see 2014?
Midseason check-in: Outlook uncertain. Probably still around, unless the team completely tanks in the second half and he does something foolish. My guess - he sacrifices Ned Yost this offseason and gets one more shot with a new manager in 2014.
9) Will Danny Duffy come back healthy? And if he does, is he the same, better or worse?
Midseason check-in: Yes. Velocity looks the same, and it looks likely he is the same guy as before.
10) And the big one: Has KC added enough to run down the big-money Detroit Tigers?
Midseason check-in: Doesn't look like it, does it?

I would talk to the Dodgers and see the status on Andre Ethier. Dodgers have two stud outfield prospects that are pretty close to being ready and they took on a shit ton of salary whould maybe look to unload some of it. I'm sure we have some propsects they like. Downside is he has a huge salary and isn't producing. But he has in the past.

Gordon
Cain
Ethier
Butler
Hosmer
Perez
Moose
Esky
Johnson

Starting pitching is middle of the pack. Its not a big concern, they have done alright. The bullpen is a top 10 group for the most part. They have blew a couple of games, but all of them do. The Royals problems is the lack of bats. Somehow they need to go get one and they don't come cheap.

Ned Yost's job isn't safe.

How could it be, with a team that was built to contend this year and has spent the last three weeks losing more games than any team in baseball? How could it be, when Yost pushed for a change in hitting coaches and his promising young hitters look worse than they did last year?

Ned Yost's job isn't safe, but people with knowledge of the situation say the Royals aren't on the verge of firing their manager.

Not yet.

For now, it seems that general manager Dayton Moore is prepared to stand behind Yost, and also that the Glass family that owns the Royals is prepared to support that stance.

"Ned's been very steady and consistent in the way he has led the team," Moore said in a phone interview on Wednesday.

Moore is very steady and consistent himself, and his support for Yost is well known in the game. But there's also an increasing belief that Moore won't want to wait for the Glass family to demand a change, and a strong belief that if a change is made, Moore will seek a veteran manager to replace Yost.

One name that has already come up: Jim Fregosi, whose son, Jim Jr., joined the Royals' front office last year as one of Moore's special assistants.

Fregosi turned 71 in April, and his most recent job as a manager was with the 2000 Blue Jays. But he has remained active in the game as a scout with the Braves and, at times, has shown interest in returning to the dugout.

Fregosi declined comment, and Moore wouldn't say anything about the speculation.

But if the Royals continue to lose, you can count on that speculation increasing.

They've lost seven in a row heading into Wednesday night's game at St. Louis and have equaled a franchise record set last year with 10 consecutive home defeats. The Royals are 1-11 in their last 12 games and have scored just 30 runs in that span (with 39-year-old Miguel Tejada hitting their only two home runs).

Since beginning the season with 17 wins in their first 27 games, the Royals have gone 4-18, the most losses in baseball in that span.

Moore's winter moves to improve the Royals' rotation have actually worked out pretty well, but the young lineup that was supposed to produce hasn't. Mike Moustakas has just three hits in his last 44 at-bats, and Eric Hosmer and Salvador Perez each has just one home run all season.

While the defense and bullpen have also been disappointing, it's the lack of offense that is most stunning.

Yost successfully pushed last year for hitting coach Kevin Seitzer to be fired, saying at the time, "I just felt the offense underperformed all year long." The Royals replaced Seitzer with a pair of hitting coaches, Jack Maloof and Andre David, both of whom had worked in the Royals' organization and were familiar with the team's young hitters.

Moustakas and Hosmer, in particular, seem to have regressed.

"They don't have the bat speed, and they don't have the impact with their bats they had in the minor leagues," said one scout who closely follows the Royals.

And so the Royals keep losing, taking their seven-game skid on the road to St. Louis and then to Texas. Yost took over as manager in May 2010, and this is the Royals' sixth losing streak of at least six games in the three years since then.

Many people in the game believe that Yost is at his worst in times like this, and his comments after Tuesday's loss to the Cardinals won't change that impression.

"What are you asking me to do?" Yost said, according to the Kansas City Star. "Take my belt off and spank them? Yell at them? Scream at them? What do you want? These kids, every day, we go through the process. We're talking constantly about approach.

"Do we need to make changes? This can't continue. Somewhere down the road, yeah, we're going to have to make some changes."

Many people already believe that Yost himself will be one of the changes.

But the people who make the decisions don't appear to be on the verge of doing that just yet.

The Royals should have dumped Yost for Francona this offseason.
