some schools lose money playing in bowl games by the time they pay expenses. It really is about the marketing and ad revenue for the sponsors and to a certain extent about giving the players something to play for and to extend their season. Coaches like it for recruiting and extra practice time.

The proof is the number of coaches who take another job before the games even get here. That shows you have important most think the games are. |

This year there were more coaching departures from bowl teams than usual. Even in years past some coaches stay to coach the games (Urban Meyer at Utah) even though they've accepted new jobs.

as I said, aside from the payouts (which get divvied up a lot, soi the school doesn't get it all, except ND) the big draw is for recruiting and practice time. If a coach is looking to move on to another job, he will leave when he wants, but most schools probably would prefer they leave if they aren't going to devote their efforts to the game. Most of the coaches who leave do so to begin buiulding staffs and such, and since coaches are usually hired and fired in the weeks between the season and bowl games, you can't hardly blame them for trying to beat the competition. |
