NFT: Physical Education

I'm just curious how CP members feel about physical education programs in the United States. Do CP members feel that Physical Education should be a “basic” subject or a supplementary area of the curriculum?

Also, does it concern CP members that time spent in physical education classes across the country has dropped over the last decade from 42 percent of students in 1991 to 25 percent in 1995? (Even though I can't find any accurate reports of recent percentages.)

Just want some thoughts/comments.

PE isn't going to buff out a fatass and it isn't enough to whip anyone into good physical condition. A running class or weight training class I could understand.

Hell one of my buddies is taking weight lifting and advanced PE in college. He says they just spend half and hour in the gym and then go play 3 on 3 for another 45 minutes. Not that his parents know that. I never had a problem with PE in highschool I always looked forward to getting outta the classroom for a bit.

I absolutely think PE should be a major class and should be done everyday. In the school I teach in our kids have PE every other day. I had it every day my entire school career. In high schools I agree that those who play varsity sports don't need PE, they could substitute a study hall to help them keep eligible for their sport.

I just watched Supersize Me this past weekend. Quite disturbing to see exactly how fat we are as a nation.

Another thing that bothers me is all of these bogus Low Carb diets. The only diet that really works is to eat less food and exercise. If we send the message to kids that exercise isn't that important, they won't continue to do it when they leave school and the country will get fatter and more unhealthy.

Unfortunately PE programs are being lost to test prep classes. Someone came up with the great idea that a school's effectiveness can be best measured by how well students do in reading, writing, and rithmetic on one test, and thus any funding you hope to get will be based on that one test, so voila, bye bye PE, hello test prep!

I lost 65 lbs on the carb diet. The problem is kids stuffing their face and being lazy...

PE won't cure lazy...

Heheh, are you a PE coach?
I'm all for PE, but the periods need to be longer. I don't like changing and taking shitty school showers for 30 minutes to run for 15 minutes. The system sucks, but PE itself owns.

The problem is, somewhere along the line someone decided that you had to sit in a desk and read a book for it to be a legit class. Most people learn better by doing anyway. Sometimes all you need is an outlet and structure to teach you something you'll remember for the rest of your life.

That is correct. I believe it's one of the state requirements in order to graduate from high school, especially in Kansas. I don't know how it works out on the other states though.

Nope, I'm a science teacher. I agree periods definitely need to be longer, and less. We have 9 periods in my school day, each 39 minutes long. I think it's hard enough doing a lab in that span of time, I can't imagine how frustrating it is trying to play any kind of game.

I always took PE classes in High School. Of course I took all the easiest classes.

One thing that I find kinda funny now is we always showered after gym class. None of my kids showered after gym. They say nobody does.

Not sure of the requirements here in PA, but in my high school career, I had PE every semester of Every year (From mid 10th grade on).

2 semesters over 4 years is downright apalling.

Hmm we had 7 50min classes. Still too short.

I must say I somewhat disagree with you on the way stuff is being taught. You can't learn everything by doing it. You have to know the theories behind the material. Besides you can't physically "DO" history or math or a language for that matter. Just a few examples.
