Digital cameras. Advice needed.

I'm thinking about getting a new digital camera, but not sure what I want. I have a 2.1 megapixel Hewlett Packard that takes nice pictures...as long as you have good lighting. Indoor pictures usually turn out looking dark and grainy. I'd like to pickup a new one with 5-7 MP and 3/4 X optical zoom (I only have digital zoom now and it basically worthless).

I've been looking at the Canon A610 (5.0 MP, 4x zoom) or the A620 (7.1 MP, 4x zoom). Anyone have any experience with these cameras? Or Canon's in general? How do they do in low light situations? Any other brands or models you recommend?

Tell me about your experiences please.

TIA...

I've owned two Canon Powershots. The first was a few years ago (S110, I think). As tough as it was, it didn't like being flushed down the toilet by my then two year old. The present one's a 4.0 megapixel A Something. No problems, and I'm pleased with the picture quality.

Picked up a 6.1 MP Kodak EasyShare [with the dock, but the plain old dock, not the printer dock] on Black Friday for 199. Like what I've gotten out of it so far.

I had a Kodak that I wasn't impressed with, so I upgraded to a Sony. I love it.

I really like this Sony, I sure wished I could afford it.

The only camera close to Canon in the digital world is Nikon. I have a Canon G3 with a 420ex, before that i had a Canon S30. I'm saving for a D20 right now because i've gone as far as i can with my point and shoot.

You can't go wrong with a Canon. I have a couple of friends that have them and they've never complained.

I currently have a Sony W7 because of the 2.5" LCD. The zoom suck but the pictures are great.

This is an interesting thread.

Can anyone recommend a good digital camera with a longish zoom? My current has 3x and it's definitely not enough for my needs.

The one Dallas Chief posted is a bit pricey.
