Chiefs' offense: "one of the worst in the league, by nearly every measure"

http://www.arrowheadpride.com/2013/9...chiefs-offense

some numbers to chew on from arrowhead pride

Quote:
The Chiefs are actually 12th in the league in PPG, at 23.7. But if you take away the 14 points the defense is directly responsible for, that number drops to 19 PPG, which would be tied for 23rd - with the Raiders. The Chiefs are relying on the defense to score points, which isn't good. Defensive scoring is random and shouldn't be part of the game plan. They didn't need Tamba Hali's pick-6 to beat the Jaguars, but they did need Eric Berry's against the Eagles.

They also are just not moving the ball; their 333 yds/gm is 21st in the league and their 4.9 yds/play ranks 25th. "Well Kyle," you may ask, " if the Chiefs offense is so bad, how are they undefeated this year?" That's an excellent question, thank you for asking. The answer is that the defense and special teams are much, much better than we thought.
Quote:
The problem the Chiefs are having is getting to the Red Zone in the first place. They're 30th in yards per drive, with only Tampa Bay and Jacksonville behind them, and Cleveland directly in front of them (not good company to be in). This is a really, really bad offense. But here's the real kicker: the Chiefs' offense has the best starting field position in the NFL this year, and still can't score.
Quote:
The Chiefs average 17 yards per drive better field position than their opponents (ok, ok, 16.95), the best mark in the NFL (2nd table). Only two other teams average more than 10 yards better starting field position than their opponents (New England and Chicago). The Chiefs' average starting line of scrimmage (LOS) is their own 36.97 yard line (best in the NFL), while their opponents average starting LOS is their own 20.02 yard line (also best in the NFL). What all of that means is the Chiefs's offense is handed consistently great starting field position and can't do anything with it, then they let the special teams pin opponents deep in their own territory. The defense bails out the offense by not letting opponents move the ball, giving the offense the ball back with great starting field position. Lather, rinse, repeat.
There's a nice breakdown of our defense against philly over there as well:
http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2013/9/2...p-kelly-eagles

Quote:
I have to reiterate and emphasize just how much the Chiefs played man to man -- like a ton of it. And they have the secondary to handle it, unlike most teams in the NFL. Specifically, they matched up Sean Smith on Cooper a lot on the outside. If this had been a prize fight, Cooper's corner would have thrown in the towel somewhere around the middle of the second quarter. Smith owned him right up until the end of the game when he started cramping up. Cooper just couldn't shake him, especially on those aforementioned deep routes Kelly had him running all game.

If you look at that play where JC wasn't looking for the ball on the pass, Bowe was on an out and up and would have been open... the chemistry needed to throw it at the right time and taking that kind of shot is needed at times (granted, he dropped the next ball thrown to him). We got a taste of that in the 2nd half, with Smith taking some chances, which is promising.
I also noticed that when he made that great throw to McGrath on a bang-8 he also had Bowe wide open on a comeback. I can't blame him at all for not giving his wideouts more chances after how many times they haven't held up their end of the bargains with drop and after drop, week after week. Avery today was a great example of this--Alex looked for him early in the game and after like three drops he didn't go to him at all for a while. Our receivers haven't proven that they are reliable enough to be trusted so far. They're dropping an ABNORMALLY large amount of balls compared to the rest of the league (4th most dropped balls coming into this game, I don't think it'll change much for the better going into next week..)

Eh, still need improvement in some aspects of the offense, but...

That 9:17 drive in the 4th quarter, aided with the Giant penalty, was textbook perfect of finishing it off in style.

Sorry to buck your theory, but nobody is asking to see Alex Smith throw bombs. All we've ever been talking about was making some of the deeper intermediate throws into tighter coverage that we saw during the game today. He has the arm and the accuracy for it, he's just been extremely conservative in his decision making. What he did today won't be anything but good for the offense going forward. It lets him build some confidence in his recievers, and vice versa, and it's something that now the teams down the road will see on tape, and know they have to account for. It's a very good wrinkle to add.

That 9 min drive in the 4th quarter was awesome. They did the same thing last week. From this game going forward, this trend is going to start making teams think about the repercussions of being behind going into the fourth quarter. We may start seeing more risky moves by other teams in the third quarter if the Chiefs are ahead. They may not fear Alex Smith's game management in quarters 1-3 but they will start to fear it in the fourth quarter.

Go Chiefs!!!! 4-0 baby!!!!

Wrong.

Alex Smith detractors:"Would like to see Alex Smith take some shots downfield to loosen up the defense".

Alex Smith supporters:"He's winning. He's doing enough. He doesn't need to throw bombs every play"

Alex Smith detractors:"Never said bombs every play. Just a shot mixed in here and ther to looen things up and open the short and intermediate routes"

Alex Smith supporters:"You won't be happy unless Alex Smith wins 11ty billion Sbs"

Alex Smith detractors:"AAAAAAAaaaaaaaarghhh"

Being 4th in most dropped passes out of 32 teams is pretty "abnormally high," I think? Can't really get much higher or abnormal than that

Also not sure what that has to do with playing against playoff teams..

I agree with you. But I think there is a happy medium. Most teams that lead the league in turnovers, don't have winning records.

Usually though, the teams with the best TURNOVER ratio, do however.

That's what you want to strive for. Good post by you though.

Chiefs have to take a few more long shots down field to keep the D honest. That being said Smith missing an open Avery on the deep sideline doesn't help. He needs to make that throw. Of course that would mean Avery would actually have to make the catch, which is iffy at best it seems.

Wonder where Hemmingway is.
