Group of Chiefs fans wants to turn up volume at Arrowhead

Loudest stadium in Seattle? Not if a group of Chiefs fans has anything to say about it.

Congregating in a newly formed Facebook group dubbed Terrorhead Returns, the fast-growing cadre of red-and-yellow-clad fans is hoping to counter a group of Seahawks backers who are attempting to get CenturyLink Field into the Guinness Book of Records as the loudest stadium on Earth.

Quoting from the Terrorhead Returns page: “We have submitted an application with Guiness (sic) World Book and will request the permission from the Kansas City Chiefs and the NFL to be given a fair chance to put the record where it is truly deserved. Join in Chiefs Fans! GO CHIEFS!!!”

So far, the Seattle contingent, which goes by the handle “Volume 12” (an homage to the team’s “12th Man” legacy of fan support), is a step ahead of KC’s. According to a post on NFL.com, the Seattle group announced on its own Facebook page that its application to have the decibels measured at the Seahawks’ Sept. 15 Sunday Night Football showdown with the San Francisco 49ers has formally been accepted by Guinness.

The official entry would be dubbed “loudest crowd roar at a sports stadium.”

A website in Seattle, SeattlePI.com, reports that the current record is held by the Ali Sami Yen Sport Complex Turk Telekom Arena in Istanbul, Turkey. The decibels measured that day? An ear-splitting 131.76, or slightly louder than the sound of an airliner at takeoff. The Turkish fans were cheering on a soccer match played by Galatasaray S.K.

Size of the venue could factor into Seattle’s Sept. 15 bid: NFL.com reports that the highest decibels recorded at the so-called CLink peaked at 112, but notes that the Seahawks’ home digs hold 67,000, or 14,000more than the Turkish stadium.

If size matters, and if Terrorhead Returns can get a date with Guinness — and if Chiefs fans can fill it to capacity — Arrowhead could play a huge factor in a record bid. The venerable Truman Sports Complex venue holds 79,451, or more than 12,000 more than CenturyLink Field.

But Terrorhead Returns, though just launched Friday, has ground to make up in terms of likes on its Facebook page. As of 8 p.m. Tuesday, it had 1,830 members compared with 6,263 likes for Volume 12.

Seahags considering using one of their 3 attempts at the record- before the game even starts. They want the record so bad they are going to "manufacture" sound- not even in a game time setting.

When we set it in the 90's I couldn't even talk for a week after the games.

I just don't understand how the people saying they won't cheer until the team is winning don't seem to get the fact that a stadium full of cheering fans will help the team win.

Stubbornness at its finest.

So if Arrowhead being how it was in the 90's wasn't about the team winning, but was about the fans, why did it change? If it was about the fans and had nothing to do with winning, it should still be the same as it always has.

I really don't want to try to beat a decibel record we haven't come within 10 (maybe more) decibels of ever reaching. Hell, some were laughing in the Seahawks thread that there was no way they'd reach 130.

We don't need to beat our ****ing chests.

That tends to happen when the fans of this team are treated with a mild form of contempt for years on end.

You're wildly overestimating the effect of crowd noise on an NFL game.

It's much easier for Seattle's fan base to be very loud right now. They're enthusiastic because their team is successful and very fun to watch right now. The Chiefs have sucked for a decade or more.

I disagree. There are plenty of other more important factors, obviously, but it's definitely a big help. It's not estimate. We've all seen it first hand.

The game is about moments. We've all seen those moments where a single bad play can drastically swing a game and the change the outcome. We saw it first hand many times through the 90s when our home field advantage was considered one of, if not the best in the league. Our crowd could help to cause confusion on the opposing sideline, in their huddle, at the line of scrimmage, and during the play itself. Those moments caused mistakes which led to even bigger moments like turnovers, sacks, etc.

Teams would come here worried about the crowd. They knew that if they let the Chiefs hit a big play or two early, or if they couldn't strike early to keep that crowd quiet, it was going to be a very rough afternoon for them. Then, when it actually starts to happen and they can't hear the guy next to them talk...that's a big advantage for the home team, and again, it leads to mistakes, which leads to home wins.

We all say it all the time...you gotta win your home games. If you can just win your home games you've got a shot because then you just have to win even 2 or 3 on the road to have a shot at the end. There's a reason the teams of the 90s went to the playoffs 7 times. They won their home games, and Arrowhead was a big part of that.
