He's grown, but it's pretty clear that he's not an adult. Regardless of the root cause(s) of his difficulties, Von has shown that he's not at all equipped to make good decisions. His situation got critical quickly and publicly. Now his career is very much at stake, and if his career disappears, it's not much of a stretch of the imagination to think that his entire life could spiral out of anything resembling control, if it hasn't already. His employer is being patient and generous. Of course, they're hoping that their generosity pays dividends later. His family cares, and I hope for his sake that they are motivated by a genuine, caring love. Football aside, this is just a young man in crisis. At this stage, it's time to try everything and hope that something works.

His parents are substance abuse experts? Seems like the place to treat that would be a professional help center. That would be the responsible thing to do.

Which is why the guy gets so much hate. It's not like he's depressed, he is just making dumb decision after dumb decision. I understand the reasons for him getting help, but that doesn't justify him getting himself in trouble so many times in the first place.

Of course it doesn't. Unfortunately, the kind of supportive talking points that are nearly always released by the team's front office and a player's teammates may sound like justification. In Von's case, I hear encouragement without justification, however. Perhaps you hear something different.

Gotcha. It never hurts to surround a guy in his situation with sober people who are willing to offer the correct blend of tough love and unconditional love. Getting that blend right or wrong as the user works his way out of his problems can sometimes be a matter of life and death, though. It's not easy.

I imagine that he has damned near unlimited access to some pretty good professional help as well.

I agree. It's very often incorrect to think of users as weak willed people. Quite often it's a strong willed person that becomes regularly frustrated in his interaction with the world that uses his substance as a refuge from his constant battle against an unbeatable opponent.
