An alternative program to iTunes is a program called SharePod which is freeware. You might want to give that a shot.
To convert an AVI file to an iPod file you can also use a freeware program called Videora iPod Video Converter Hope this helps |

For Mac, I use either DVDRemaster Pro (For DVDs) or iSquint for every other kind of file to convert. |

Windows. Videora seems to have done a decent job so I may stick with that. Took a 104 minute movie down to 557mb

I need to see if I could have it shrink my digital copy of Dark Knight. That damn thing is 1.6gb. No reason for it to be that big on an iPod.
EDIT Damn, it can't do a copyrighted file. Why the hell does it have to be 1.6gb for crying out loud. Does anyone know how to shrink a copyrighted m4v file? I can't find anything in my searches.
