Mock (3/24)

Assumptions:

1. S Eric Berry is placed on NFI list and is paid something harmless to our cap.

2. The Chiefs sign the following free agent: C Steve Wisniewski (Raiders) for 1 year, $4m, ILB Brandon Spikes (Bills) for 1 year, $2.5m.

On with the show:

1.18. CB Jalen Collins, LSU

With Wisniewski on board, the Chiefs OL is 100% built. So now the Chiefs can invest for the future. Sean Smith is a free agent in 2016, and while the Chiefs would LOVE to retain him, they'll likely be preoccupied trying to rope in Houston and Poe. So the Chiefs elect for a tall, physical, super-fast CB. Collins has #1 measurables, but isn't quite lockdown material. Fortunately, under Sutton, he has every tool to be a perfect scheme fit.

2.49. WR Devin Smith, Ohio State

The Chiefs offense needs more weaponry, and the speedy, route-savvy Smith is a perfect fit.

3.80. TE Ben Koyack, Notre Dame

The Chiefs need more muscle on offense, and Koyack is a perfect scheme fit. An excellent blocker with good hands, he's absolutely a Dorsey fit. He's very athletic, and is just now reaching his full potential.

3.98. S Jaquiski Tartt, Samford

The Chiefs should extend Husain Abdullah, but in case they don't, they make an investment for the future. Tartt is a 220 lbs monster at the safety position, an extremely physical run defender who needs work in coverage. With as often as the Chiefs play dime, having a guy who can excel at the dime LB position could be valuable.

4.118. RB David Johnson, Northern Iowa

Perhaps my favorite RB of this whole draft, Johnson is a power runner with great size and large, powerful thighs. Johnson is a future feature back in the NFL. He doesn't have great top end speed, but he'll be a three-down back; his hands are so great, UNI considered moving him to TE.

5.172 & 5.173. QB Sean Mannion, Oregon State & WR Chris Conley, Georgia

The Chiefs can't keep their hands off QBs, nor should they, and Mannion is easily the best of the late rounds. Conley boasts extreme upside as one of the fastest WRs in the draft despite his 6'2" size.

6.192. NT Ellis McCarthy, UCLA

The Chiefs need to make extreme investments to back up Poe. Ellis is a 6'5", 330+ lbs beast with long arms. He's a one dimensional run stuffer, but that's exactly what the Chiefs terrible run defense needs.

6.217. NT Xavier Williams, Northern Iowa

Not as one dimensional as McCarthy, but is a solid jack-of-all-trades nose tackle.

7.233. ILB Curtis Grant, Ohio State

Chiefs gamble on a really good athlete.

If we're drafting two nose tackles I assume you think one can play DE as well?

Of all the CBs we could take in the 1st, you chose Jalen Collins?

For the love of God, do you not understand our need on the offensive live. We have 10 draft picks and we don't take ONE fu@king lineman, not one?

I'm cool with using our first two picks in this draft for something other than a big fat guy, but your are nuts if you don't think the Chiefs are going to walk out of this draft with an OT and OG.

I'm a big proponent of being 3 deep at that position, actually.

But I think Williams could play some DE if pressed.

A reach like that is 20 times more egregious than the Dee Ford pick. It's Marcus Smith-level of bad reach.

I'd rather have Cam Erving rape me with a dildo made from his old jockstraps than see the Chiefs take Jalen Collins in the 1st.

I really like Collins at CB, but believe he'll go early in the 2nd round, 18 is too high. Mannion is my sleeper pick at QB and I really like Xavier as a back-up NT. That said, I think we can do better at the other picks.

Kush could probably be a better C for us than Wisniewski.

I want no part of that weak pussy at the C position.

With Wisniewski.....that's 3 offensive linemen in FA. Add Fulton and Duvernay from last year and you have a ton of offensure linemen on this team. Exactly where are they putting all of them?

I think they should draft OT somewhere in the mid rounds. I doubt Stephenson will be here next year and Allen might not either. Not gonna rely on Sherrod.

Need a swing tackle or eventual RT.

I don't think some of you understand the modern NFL. There are no "cheap" free agent fixes to be found on the Oline. Just look at the money we are paying Fanaika.

When I look at the Chiefs line, I notice that we basically have two legitimate linemen in Grubbs and Fisher. That's it.

Then we have guys like Tardif and Fulton who are developmental, cheap, and under our control for at least three more years.

Kush and Fanaika for the next two years.

Allen, Stephenson, and Sherrod are all in the final years on their deal. It is incredibly important to create a young pipeline of talent when it comes to the oline. Besides helping us deal with injuries, it also helps us manage the cap. For example, Tardif is costing us $543k this year, where Fanaika costs three times that. You can't build an oline anymore in free agency. Next year 15 million of our cap will be devoted to Fisher, Grubbs, and Fanaika.

This is why you can't have 10 draft picks, especially two third rounders and not invest in line. I understand we need a backup center, but a signing like that plugs a hole and does nothing to better the team in the future.
