Anyone here use Flash Drives?

It seems like they would be the cool way to back up your files and transport from one puter to another.

I've carried one in my pocket for two years. I think they work great. They're as easy to use as a floppy disk, but they hold tons more and they don't crap out for no reason.

Yep. Used to use one all the time to carry files from the computer at home to the computer at the office. Now that I have the laptop, I just carry the laptop back and forth.

However, I do carry the Flash Drive in the laptop case so I have it when needed.

i love mine. i wish i could hang onto them a little better or at least keep them out of the freaking washing machine. PSA: A Lexar JumpDrive will survive the washing machine if you let it dry out really well before you use it again. A SanDisk will not survive the dryer on high heat. melts horribly.

They're great. It makes it a lot easier to work on the same projects using the Macs at home and the PCs at the various offices I use during the week.

I use a 512 MB SanDisk "cruzer mini" I got for my birthday last year. The only trouble it's ever given me is that it doesn't like the USB ports on our iMac keyboard (not enough electrical power or something), so I have to use the USB ports on the main body of the iMac, which isn't that big a deal in my case. My girlfriend's cruzer mini doesn't have the same problem, even though she bought hers around the same time as I got mine.

Yup, the Lexar jump drives are the same way. They don't like any USB ports but the ones in the back of the computer, whether PC or Mac. The only weird thing I've had with my Lexar is that it doesn't pick up the drive when I plug it in on a Windows system. It shows a drive has been detected, but it shows that it is empty. When I click on the drive image it says, "Insert a disk into drive." Then if I log out and back on, it picks up the drive fine and works. Minor annoyance, but it is an annoyance.

I have a Lexar jumpdrive secure 256mb. I like it alot. The only problem I have had is with an older computer not wanting to let me eject it and having to pull it from the system or shut the computer down and some of the files get corrupted or lost! But other than that they are handy has heck.

I've got a 5 year old PDA with a SD card slot. I allocate all 64MB of memory for RAM and use a 512MB card as a hard drive. It's running linux as well, so it's got a full suite of net apps. It's kinda fun to look for wireless networks while listening to MP3s and walking around the neighborhood. (well Ogg Vorbis actually but not too many would know what that is)

Ever since getting it I always had an SD card with a reader handy.

I am such a creature of habbit. I do the same things until somthhing forces me out of my box, then I reconfigure and move on. I got a new laptop and no parralel ports on them, so I made sure I got a cheapie stick. Unbelievable. I swapped the files from my old pc hard drive to the stick in seconds.

They render the zip drives completely obsolete.

As long as the device you are porting to is USB capable, is there any need for CD's? Really? Serious question from a tech baby.

The main advantage of CDs is that they're cheap, disposable media, which is okay for archiving stuff. Though I think tape is considered better than CDs for backups.

I love my Lexar 512MB Jumpdrive, though. It's awesome.

Floppy replacement. Pretty much a CD-RW replacement as well.

I'll echo what NewChief said. CD's are cheap, and if I'm giving something to more than one person, it would be a bit expensive to give each one a flash drive. Of course, most times I'm transferring files to multiple people I use email.
