Be the GM Part 3

This will be a repeating feature. We will take each position in turn. For each position we will look at the players we already have on the roster and whether those player should be retained, resigned, traded, or cut. We will also discuss whether we need help in the draft, trades or free agency. The next position look to be another area we need help, DEFENSIVE LINE.

Currently on the roster we have:

Glenn Dorsey DE under contract $5.2 million cap hit
Allen Bailey DE under contract approx $2 million cap hit
Wallace Gilberry DE UFA
Kelly Gregg DT UFA
Tamba Hali DE under contract approx $12 million cap hit
Tyson Jackson DE under contract $2.5 million cap hit
Jerrell Powe DT under contract, unknown salary
Anthony Torbio DT under contact $405,000 cap hit
Brandon Bair DE unknown status

Gilberry can stick around if he wants to lose weight and be a rush DE. He gained weight last season to try to be a 3 down player and was not as effective.

They have to find a NT. I'm sure Gregg will retire.

I think if we sign or draft a nose tackle for competition we're good. Let everyone duke it out for depth chart status.

I would resign Gordon also. He was our Shaun Smith of 2011. Good depth and probably cheap.

Not that I'm going to participate in this exercise, but my assumption is that by "cap hit", you're stating the hit to the cap if the player is cut.

A bit more info is needed to help people, however. Is that the net effect of cutting the player, or the gross cap charge for cutting the player, in which cse it's overstating the "hit" relative to the amount the player would get anyway. Easiest fix is to state the player's salary for this year also.

For example, if Hali's salary this year is $10MM, but cutting him results in a cap hit of $12MM, then really all you need to know is "$10MM on the books WITH Hali, or $12MM WITHOUT Hali"

etc.

I remember on year the Pats cut someone and it was a significant "cap hit", but really it was net zero. The amount on the cap was going to be about $5MM either way, but the Patriots preferred to cut him and NOT have him (for $5MM on the cap) rather than keep him (for $5MM on the cap).

Anyway, carry on.

Gregg is dead man walking unless he wants to come back as a backup. I would see what kind of trade bait Dorsey can be with Bailey coming on. I think many will think Dorsey has more ability in a 4-3. I would look in round 2 for a NT.

We suffer thru some of the worst seasons in Chiefs history, finally get some good players, and fans can't wait to trade them.

For ****s sake, Dorsey just finished his 4 year in the league and was one of the top ranked players at his position.

He does exactly what he was drafted to do, especially in the scheme he is playing in. Lets keep him around.

To me we have the young players to take over. We also have a big need of moving up and Dorsey could good trade bait. I would like to keep him as well, but his best value to the team may be in trade.

I think you need to have lots of depth on the DL. More than any other position, you need to rotate those guys to keep them fresh. At DE, there are plenty of snaps for Jackson, Dorsey, Bailey and to a lesser extent Gilberry. Some of those guys can play inside on passing downs. The clearest need we have on the DL is a two-down run stopping NT. Maybe Powe can be that guy, or he can be depth at that position, in which case he would get a couple of hundred snaps a year. Other than that, our DL is fine. i wouldn't trade Dorsey because I don't think you'd get the value for him. We need six guys that can contribute at this position. I think we have four, and possibly five with Powe.

Players aren't even really used in the NFL. The picks are so highly valued, if a team needed another chip they would probably ask for another high pick and decline taking Dorsey.
