Trading for Nick Foles

Nick Foles to the Chiefs? Two perspectives (well, mostly one)
By MNchiefsfan on Jan 19, 6:33a 692

http://www.arrowheadpride.com/2013/1...-chiefs-rumors

Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

Why NOT throw another QB's name into the mix? The Chiefs can use all the help they can get at the position in 2013.

I don't know if you've gotten the memo, but quarterback is the main topic of discussion for the Kansas City Chiefs this offseason and for the 2013 NFL Draft.

What quarterback is the best of this draft class? Should the Chiefs draft a quarterback? What round should we draft a quarterback? Should we get a quarterback in free agency? Is Geno Smith awesome or terrible, with no in between? What quarterbacks are available via trade?

And on and on it goes....

I'm not immune to this latest obsession with quarterbacks. I'd say the decision as to whom the Chiefs place behind center next season will largely make or break the next several years (if not the next dozen years) of Chiefs football. If the Chiefs blow it, we'll continue to be trapped in mediocrity for a couple of years. If the Chiefs knock it out of the park, we might contend for a Super Bowl for a decade. Somewhere in between and we could go back and forth between the two for awhile. It's kind of a big deal.

continue in spoiler

Spoiler!

Cassel's fine as a backup. That's what he is, and his salary drops to a reasonable amount for one. I think he's toxic and will ultimately be cut, and I'm fine with that. I'm great with that.

But giving up a pick for someone else's trash for our backup?

Yeah, no.
For the record, I don't think most people read the article. It says Draft Geno AND bring in Foles if available/possible. Then makes a decent argument for why it's not a bat shit crazy idea. If that first part is there, I've got no problem with it.

On the other hand, which world is this where "Cassel's fine as a backup?" I can't COMPREHEND how anybody would even trust cassel to test toilets because he craps his pants so often, much less be our backup.

Philly needs QBs just as bad as KC does. Foles may not fit Kellys offense, but he's likely the best/most experienced QB on his roster, and he's already paid for. They aren't going to let him go for anything less than too much.

people around here are so pissed it's made them stupid, they can't understand any words but "Draft Geno ... derp, derp, derp" They refuse to even understand "Draft Geno Smith AND .... " because their brains just shut down after Smith.

"Let's just go into next year with only 1 QB on the roster. Geno Smith can throw every pass in TC,Preseason and Regular season ... if his arm falls off then just **** it we will let Charles run the wildcat because are not playing a single QB besides Geno Smith this year ... derp, derp, derp"
That's NOT AT ALL what was said.

This is just like people suggesting trading a 2nd round pick for Cousins. WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT? Why trade draft value for guys that don't hold that much value?

If you want to trade for a backup, fine. We need a backup QB. But don't overpay. It's that simple.

He's not just saying that and you know it, stop defending that idiot.

I don't think a single person said "trade for Foles and forget drafting a QB". This is about the possibility of trading to increase the total talent level at the QB position for us. Competition.

If people want to discuss how much Foles is worth in trade then fine.

Agreed. Even if that means bringing him in at a higher pick. But I doubt Philly would make this kind of a move.

As for Cassel as a backup, why in the world would we pay $7.5M for him to be a backup? There are more talented veterans out there. I still wonder if the Chiefs will look into Kolb (as a backup). Not saying that's a great decision, but it wouldn't surprise me if the Cards cut ties with him and there's the obvious Reid connection. I feel like he could be had at a high-priced veteran contract.

Why?

Why give up a higher pick for Foles when you could potentially get the same thing out of a late round draft pick this year?

When you trade higher picks for QBs on somebody else's rosters you're creating an expectation that they won't be the BACKUP.
