2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread

2012 Slogan: Our Time

A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year
(from Great Expectations)

An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division
(from alnorth)

With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

Quote:
If you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

I'm not a huge Glass critic because I'm pleased with the progress of this franchise and the willingness to spend money on draft picks, Latin talent, etc. But I sure would have loved to have seen him respond with some righteous indignation about carving out the "Royals Way" to a title, not tuck tail and walk away like a little bitch.

2009 and 2010 the royals spent some money. If Dayton Moore plan was to kill the payroll in 2011 and 2012 and let the young players learn on the job, then In 2013 and 2014 add to the payroll when they can Compete For A Playoff Spot. That's not a bad plan.

Just got tix to Fan Fest and the Futures Game tomorrow. Can't wait to see the young guys play. 2 Royals starting pitchers to begin the game with Myers batting third. Anybody know who's going to be around signing autographs tomorrow at FanFest?

It wasn't two years ago the Royals were at that 75-80 million mark and spent more money than playoff and World Series teams on multiple occasions. Of course that was because of guys like Guillen and Meche. They moved a lot of that money out to bring in Moose and Hosmer and those guys. You would hope the payroll will get back to that as we sign some of these guys. But people probably have about zero memory. I think they're at 60 million now. I get the logic behind it. You're probably looking at numerous increases of payroll this team will potentially face in the next 3-4 years.

We'll see what they do. If everyone pans out obviously you can't keep everyone. But they haven't let someone walk because of money since Beltran and that was almost a decade ago. I think boneheaded decisions by the front office have a million times more to do with things than money spent. And those payrolls aren't even including all the money they threw at FAs like Torii Hunter or Kuroda or Orlando Hudson who shot them down.

I remember, and common sense would suggest a return, but comments from management seem to run counter to common sense. 2.5 for 85? What?

See how easy that is?

By walking away with his tail between his legs just added more fuel to the fire that he's a shitty out of touch owner. As if the Royals record over the past 20 years didn't already speak for itself.

The indication in the past is that they can save some money in the short term while these kids mature and once they are due bigger contracts we will have "saved" the money to pay them. We'll see if that happens. If it doesn't even I will have a hard time continueing to back the team. It's good that they've already signed a few long term while the getting was good.

I don't find anything wrong with having a small payroll right now while most of the team is young and hasn't earned the big payday yet. Once a few guys have earned it we better pay it or it was all just more lip service imo.

This is pretty much going to be my breaking point, too. It'll have to be a perfect storm of the team having no success and letting guys like Hos and/or Moose walk, but I can see myself finally saying "**** it" if it goes down like I see it in my head...

And Glasshole can suck one. I hate him more than I think I've ever hated a sports figure. Until the [Major League] team starts winning under his watch, I don't really care how much he's spent on draftees & foreign players. The one constant in the last 15-20 years of KC being the worst team in baseball is Glass.

Chen, frenchy and Hos have all turned to shit this year

still not a clutch gene to be found on the team ... although Moose looks like he might be building towards it. Brox gets it done in clutch time but only after an 'almost disaster' every time.

I think we all had to expect Frenchy to come back down to Earth & that Chen couldn't possibly keep up what he had been doing for too much longer (at least that's how I saw it). And I firmly believe that Hosmer's going to be fine. He seems to be fighting his way out of it.

Good news is that we've got Myers who should take over for Frenchy before too long (I'm making the rather large assumption that Dayton doesn't **** this up). I don't have any good news with the pitching except that maybe Odorizzi can help, but I'm not holding my breath that he'll be the savior we need.

<3 Moose.

With the ASG in town, I keep reading all these articles about KC fans having hope for something better in the future. And I've got hope that when Yuni & Frenchy get out of our every day lineup and Cain's healthy, we're going to have a damn good, young lineup. But we still need pitching. And I don't have the hope that either 1) Glass pays what he'll have to in order to acquire quality pitching or 2) Dayton doesn't **** it up somehow. Suppose it won't stop me from at least trying to enjoy the rest of the season, though...
