*.* 2013 General Fitness Thread *.*

Welcome to 2013! Now get your ass in top physical condition!

**From the 2012 Thread**

If you want to get back into lifting, or need a new lifting routine, START HERE:

http://startingstrength.wikia.com/wi...inner_Programs

If you have questions about the SS programs, look here:

http://startingstrength.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ

Keep in mind that you're a novice lifter for a longer period of time than you think you are. Novice lifting can last anywhere from a few months to a year or two, depending on how hard you hit the weights and where you started.

Once you've reached the point where you don't make regular progress on the SS program, you are ready to move on to the intermediate stage, which can last you for a good number of years. Find it HERE:

http://madcow.hostzi.com/5x5_Program/Linear_5x5.htm

If you're a very advanced lifter (many, many years of CONSISTENT weight training), then there are lot of programs out there, and which one you pick is simply a matter of preference. If you're really that advanced, you should know what works for you and what doesn't by this point.

That means nothing. Bananas are good for potassium and getting constipated. Not much more.

I don't want him just drinking less water because he thinks it causes cramps. I'm thinking it is some electrolyte imbalance or something. Anybody have any idea what's going on?
Drink as much what? Coffee?

I had my first leg day last Monday since I pulled my hammy a few months ago. I was basically worthless the next two days. I was locking my knees while I walked to avoid having to use my quads.

Now my body has gotten back in a rhythm and they get kind of "itchy" for lack of a better term. If I sit still for too long my muscles feel like they itch and I'll need to stretch immediately. That stretch always feels fantastic though.

I hate leg day but the feeling of accomplishment afterward is a great thing.

How often do you do them? If you're only doing them once a week, then yeah you're going to keep being extremely sore. The more you work them out, the less sore you're going to get after each workout.

Why does everyone hate on Smith machines so much? Is the difference between using them as opposed to free weights really so significant or is it just the principle?

If I don't have a spotter I'd like to be able to lift without the fear of death looming over my chest/neck.

Nothing is ever done in a fixed pattern like the Smith machine. I don't bench, squat or deadlift with a perfectly straight bar path. The Smith machine uses no muscle stabilizers and there is almost zero carryover to compound lifts. There is nothing functional about it And I've never known anyone who's big or strong that solely uses the Smith Machine. The body is built on compound movements.

I bench without a spotter for most of my sets. On days I go heavy, I simply ask someone to spot me. Simple.

Its significant because stabalizing is a big part of weight lifting.

They're better than nothing, but if you're worried about getting smashed just use dumbbells.

Started an RPE routine this week.

Not sure if I like it, simply because it takes so ****ing long to do a workout.

Has anyone got any leg workouts for someone with a gimpy knee (had 2 ops on various things). Squats hurt like hell so I don't do them anymore. Anything else?

Can one make the same argument about the leg press machine? I know it's a heavily debated topic on the internet and maybe this thread.

Also I've been slacking like **** lately. Working 16 hours a week of OT and letting it effect me.
