Been a while since we had a guns n' ammo discussion.


Some of you are AR shooters Im sure. Im looking at a Colt 6920. Will be my first AR. Picked up a Glock this fall and really enjoy shooting it. Any feedback on that weapon?



Anyone else been in a buy/sell/trade mood with hardware?

I do not know a lot about m&a parts except that they come fairly well recommended from online forums.


I plan on building my AR-10 out of a forging, which is only an 80% complete receiver. I will have to mill/drill a few holes in the lower using a template and a press.

My upper will probably have an 18-20" DPMS fluted bull and a nice floating quad rail with Harris Bipod. I will probably go Chip McCormick or Timney for the trigger and Magpul on the buttstock.

Looking at around 16-1800. I am still debating if I should just buy a DPMS SASS and replace the trigger.........But that wouldn't be as much fun.

The best part: NO PAPERWORK.

Pretty much.


Do a quick google search and you can find out which platform can use what ammo. AR10s are built a lot stronger for obvious reasons.

notorious, those two links you provided in post 1863, I'm only seeing AR15 (.223/5.56) stuff, not .308 or AR10 platform stuff. That's one thing I've noticed about building a .308 version, a lot less choice, and more expensive.

I've got a friend who is helping me with this .308 build. He's put together a lot of .223/5.56 versions and knows what he's doing. He's also built one based on the new 6.62 cartridge which I've fired, very nice!

He told me he's pieced together a DPMS .308 for aproximately $1350.

I'm debating on whether to go this rout or a much nicer/more expensive .308 from a manufacturer like LaRue.

AR10 is very limited and not near as modular as the AR15's. Even the magazines aren't compatible with different brands.

The way business is going right now I might just say **** it and get an Armalite, but I cringe every time I see the price.

From my experience a DPMS Bull barrel vs. just about any other $$$$ brand can keep up pretty well. Very few can shoot past the rifle itself for the diffences to matter.


I have top of the line taste, though. It's hard to pass on the best if you can make it work.

So I was talking to the owner of the gun shop where I bought my Sig556, telling him that I was wanting to go to a .308, and he told me that I might want to consider a .243 because .308 stuff was pretty hard to get right now (at least in an AR platform). Is this true from everyone's experiences here? I think it might have been because he had a .243 AR hanging on the wall that he needed to sell.

He also said he owns the M1A SOCOM model that I've been eyeing and it's a dream to shoot.

I've installed the Galil handguard (giant pain in the ass, since it was off just a little bit and I had to shave down some of the plastic in the front fittings), scope attachment with my Bushnell red dot, and barrel mount for a bipod.

I went with the Bushnell red dot over the Lucid because due to the nature of the mount the Lucid sits so high that it doesn't feel comfortable or natural using it. And I haven't added the bump fire stock yet, and won't until I determine whether or not they'll flip out over it at the range.

And this has certainly given me a better appreciation of the precision of ARs. This thing is a pain to strip and reassemble - everything fits, but just barely. The dust cover in particular was a ****ing beast to get back on. I dread the thought of cleaning it.

I plan on breaking it in this weekend.

I've built my own AR 15. It is not that difficult, it is more about your ability to read and select parts based on reading the right sources and knowing what you want, than it is about the ability to turn a wrench.

If you are going to build your upper, you need two or three tools: an armorers wrench, a torque wrench, and a vise block.

If you are going to stick an assembled upper on a lower you build, you don't need any special tools really, though there is a special wrench for the castle nut on carbine-style receiver extensions (where the stock is attached).

That is ridiculous. It is the other way around if anything. .308/7.62x51 NATO is the standard for an AR 10. 90% of the AR 10's out there are chambered that way.

My uncle has a DPMS AR 15 with a big bull barrel that shoots pretty good. However, as much as I don't want to be a snob, I'm going to be. Most of the DPMS internal parts are junk. I've heard that it is different on their AR 10's than their 15's, but at least with AR 15s, the DPMS is only for a guy that is going to shoot it a couple hundred rounds a year. The gas keys on the BCG's are not staked properly, they are not shot peened, they are not magnetic particle tested, they are chambered in .223 instead of 5.56, etc. Also, that bull barrel shoots good, but you are sacrificing most of the benefits of a handy carbine to get it. The bull barreled AR 15's are so nose heavy and poorly balanced. They weigh 2 pounds more than they should, and the weight is in the wrong place. A good medium profile barrel should be just as accurate. It might be a little different with an AR 10, because it is already a heavier battle rifle, but putting a huge bull barrel on it makes it a "bench only" gun, and that just isn't how I shoot.

Why are you disassembling the thing that far down? The glory of the AK is that you just have to field strip it, rod the barrel, wipe down the major components, at a touch of oil and reassemble until next time. You might also find that because of the piston OS there is a lot less cleaning involved.

Well, the first thing I did was replace the two piece foregrip with the Galil. I had to break it down substantially to do that. I have no plans to ever do it again.

But the dust cover sucks. My buddy has a Dremel - I may grind down the front a touch so it fits better.
