Auction vs Snake draft?

A vocal few are trying to build steam towards having an auction draft.

I have always done well with a snake draft, as its all I am used to. However, they keep saying that once you do an Auction Draft, you'll never do Snake again.

Its a 12 man league. Should I vote to keep it snake, or get on board with the auction folks?

Thoughts? Opinions?

Auction. A million times auction. As long as you're intense into fantasy sports. It's MUCH better if you're a nut about it. Like I am.

Auction/Keeper leagues are the best league. They're the premium, creme de la creme league for a fantasy owner. If you can compete in that, you can compete in ANY league.

The keeper aspect takes it to a WHOLE other level, though you have to do escalating salaries (the leagues I'm in, you add $4 to the salary each year, and if I was setting up a league from scratch, I would do escalating keeper costs for a football league... year 1 you add $4 to a keeper, year 2 you add $8, year 3 you add $12, so that lucky strikes on young guys don't eat up their entire career at ridiculously low prices).

Tips:
  • Set a budget for each position. Don't stick to it like gospel, but have an idea what you can afford.
  • Pay attention to what's left or available. If you're in a league where people like to do early tosses on high-dollar guys, you can often get good value on an expensive guy. Example: I struck early in my football auction last year and got Adrian Peterson for $36 ($150 cap).
  • Use your cash. Don't fret too much about value. Sometimes, you overpay, and that's fine as long as you don't do it on EVERYBODY.

Why should you listen to me? Let me share some info from my baseball league...

We play in a 12-team, 34-man roster league. 24 players (15 hitters, 9 pitchers) are purchased via a $300 salary cap. 10 players are acquired through a snake draft. You can keep 9 players each year.

My team this year (keepers bolded)

C - Russell Martin $1
C - Jarrod Saltalamacchia $1
1B - Adam LaRoche $12
2B - Robby Cano $36

SS - Troy Tulowitzki $39
3B - Chase Headley $1
CI - Manny Machado $7
MI - Ian Kinsler $36
OF - Mike Trout $8
OF - Bryce Harper $5
OF - Matt Kemp $28
OF - Allen Craig $8
OF - Jon Jay $1
DH - Jedd Gyorko $1
DH - Oscar Taveras $1

Bench -
Ryan Ludwick
Wilson Ramos
Mitch Moreland
Jed Lowrie

P - Jordan Zimmermann $13
P - Shelby Miller $4
P - Chris Sale $4
[B]P - Jason Motte $13 (we drafted before his elbow exploded)
P - Matt Moore $33
P - John Axford $17
P - Bobby Parnell $8
P - Vance Worley $1
P - Alex Cobb $15

Brandon Beachy was my only interesting bench pitcher.

What's the point of that? To show you what a roster can look like going into a season if you're doing auction/keeper and know what you're doing. You want to balance picking a few young guns a year with getting veteran talent that will produce.

But if you're good? You're going to succeed.

The other problem is that you need to have a pretty good league to do it. If you have 1/2 the league being dipshits about it, you can end up with some really lousy competitive balance problems.

They're the 'expert' setting for fantasy drafts, IMO. If you do the homework, you can do a damn good job of them (as I did 2 years ago in the CP draft). If you don't do the homework and decide "**** it, I'm getting Aaron Rodgers", you can end up with Beanie Wells as your #2 HB and just desperately waiting for the season to end.

There's a lot more risk for a really bad fantasy team.
Well, I'm considering changing the draft back to snake for exactly this reason - two years in and there are to many teams that aren't competitive.

I want everyone's input, but I'm going to put it to a vote.

Wasn't last year's league pretty balanced, aside from a couple of teams who were run by owners who almost immediately lost interest in the league?

IMO, they lost interest because they drafted a shitty team.

My team was bad because I did a bad job.

I kept trying, I just had a foolishly top-heavy roster.

Teams losing interest happens in every league. Snake or Auction, sometimes your team just sucks.

Well, give it some thought, because I'm going to be putting it up for a vote soon. That way if people don't like the result and want to bow out, we have time to replace them with decent options.

I've done both. The auction is certainly more work during the draft. I like the snake draft so that I can relax and drink a beer between draft picks. With an auction, I can never relax until it's over.

The other thing about the snake - it's much quicker. Not a fan of these three hour snore fests we've been having.

Pretty certain I consume beverages in either style.

Doing auction for the first time. Any vets willing to share some strategy? Anyone know of a good draft app or something that you can use on draft day and helps you track players, player values, your budget, plus other teams rosters, and their budget as well? Not sure if anything like that exists, but it should.
