Dumb idea of the day: Let Alex Smith play out his contract

http://www.arrowheadpride.com/2014/4...t-his-contract

A year ago I suggested that Alex Smith should be extended because the price would never be lower. Obviously 99% of the forum was against me, but the deal I suggested would be a bargain today.

Now paid writers are literally suggesting to let Alex play it out when there is no chance that the Chiefs could match free agent offers for him. Their defense is that he could get hurt. Wow, and if he gets hurt, who plays QB? Chiefs are screwed either way

Best case scenario if we don't extend Alex soon is the franchise tag and that means massively overpaying for another key position

Alex Smith had an average season last year, and played against a weak schedule on a team that faced many backup QB's.

Lets see what he does this year instead of investing in him permanently.
Matt Cassel had a good fluky season while facing a terrible NFC West in 2010 as well.

Ok... that's fine, but you shouldn't say Ace pulled it out of his ass when Smith did indeed say what he said that he said... wait... what?

And, again, with Smith - talk isn't cheap. I believe he meant exactly what he said. I also believe it's possible that he gets a huge deal inspite of what he said for one or both of the reasons I mentioned earlier.

Or they let him play out his contract and he walks at the end of next year. Who the **** knows!

did smith have this interview a couple years ago?

ace was saying this same thing when the trade went down...

because he pulled it out of his ass.

and im glad you believe his talk isn't cheap, hoping you are right because I have a feeling we are all going to find out sooner rather than later.

but its funny that you are playing both sides to keep it safe. he doesn't want a huge deal but he might take one due to x and y reasons

Smith gave the interview after the 2013 season. It was a direct question and he answered it with a lengthy, thought out response. Wasn't a passing comment. I'm not playing both sides to be safe. If Smith gets a huge deal, it won't be because he was looking for a big payday, it will be because either

1) Condon won't take the hit to his reputation by taking less than market value for a QB of Smith's caliber, or

2) Smith is afraid a team-friendly deal will make him expendable - just as it did in SF.

I don't know the guy personally, but I've followed his career since the draft and I've seen him restructure his contract because he wanted to stay in SF, I've seen him organize team practices when he wasn't even on a contract (during the lockout) and then sign a pretty modest contract again to stay in SF where his wifes family has roots and his own family is just a few hours south. He isn't about the money - not anymore. He wants to play and he wants to win.

Fair enough.

When it comes to Smith, I still can't shake off the apprehension... I loved how he played in the playoff game and I think my apprehension would be alleviated a bit had some of our WR's not become all droptastic in the regular season...especially in situations where Smith attempted to stretch the field, just to watch Avery inadvertently clap his hands while trying to catch a ball that he ultimately ended up missing. Still though... If the Chiefs are in a jam and we need to rely on Smith to save the day...I'm not confident. In fact, I'm pretty freaking nervous and pessimistic about it. I wish I could shake it, but it may be a case of PTSD brought on by the Cassel era. If he played more regular season games in total sexual Tyrannosaurus mode as he did in the playoff game, I would feel much more comfortable.

On a sidenote: Remember how shitty he was during the regular season vs. the Colts??? It's crazy, the 180 he turned vs. that defense from that game to the playoff game.

I actually haven't changed much on Smith. He did exactly what I expected last season, almost exactly the numbers I thought he'd have. And this won't be a popular sentiment, and I believe there are extenuating circumstances (namely injuries and coaching decisions), but he really didn't do what we needed him to do after halftime. The only TD they scored was after they were handed the ball on the 18 yard line. That's when they went up 38-10. From that point on, Smith was 14-21 for 139 yards, no TDs and a fumble. Not bad numbers, but not good either, not after starting 16-25 for 232 yards and 4 TDs. Particularly the TD doughnut (for the team, not just for him).

I know it's harsh. I know it's not fair. I know the defense is by far the most responsible for the loss. But one big play in the last 25 minutes, instead of drives that end with fumble, punt, field goal, punt and field goal, and we all end that day laughing about the game they almost blew, instead of throwing remotes at our televisions. Somebody needs to make that play, at least one guy has to shoulder the load when everything else is falling apart. Has to say "**** this shit, I'm not letting this happen!".

Unfortunately nobody did. And that includes Alex Smith. Which is the worry that I've always had about him: that he's more of a complimentary player who might not come through where other guys (like Andrew Luck, down 38-10 in a laugher...) might. Hell, think about it the other way: Chiefs are down 38-10 to anybody at Arrowhead in January. Can he lead that comeback?

I think that's the quarterback we need Alex Smith to be, or this trade was a waste. And I haven't seen that yet. 'course it's only 17 games so far.

I'm still a 49er fan. I live in Sacramento. I know that many of you will now disregard anything I have to say and that's fine.... but I'm also a fan of the Chiefs. I've been a fan of the Chiefs for years after following Montana over there and a few QB's since then.

I've always been a fan of players and will follow my favorites from time to time. I get that some fans don't give a shit about individual players and that is there right too. For example, I just saw a post in another thread that suggested we should get rid of Charles - which astounds me that anyone would want that given the level of his play and the strength of his character.

But Smith was unfairly abused by spoiled 9ers fans for years. They expected him to overcome obstacles that no QB in my opinion could have and used him as their scape goat and whipping boy. I was embarrassed by our fans and want nothing more than to see the Alex Smith led Chiefs destroy my 9ers on their home turf this coming year. I've said as much on the niners boards and as you can imagine, have received an insult or two. But I'm not alone over there. When the Chiefs come to town, there will be a number of 9ers fans in the stands, that while not so vocal about it, are pulling for Smith to put up a monster day.

Yeah what I thought too. Condon isn't going to make a player take a larger contract. An agent does not have final say on the contract the player has that authority.
