Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price

Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price

Branden Albert AP

The much-discussed potential trade of Branden Albert from the Chiefs to the Dolphins doesn’t appear likely at the price Albert is currently seeking.

Although the Chiefs and Dolphins can probably agree on compensation — the Dolphins sending a second-round pick to Kansas City — the hangup is that Albert wants the kind of money that the Dolphins aren’t willing to spend. Specifically, according to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports, Albert wants between $8 million and $9 million a year on a long-term deal.

In other words, Albert is looking for the same kind of contract that left tackle Jake Long got from the Rams — the very contract the Dolphins wouldn’t give Long, which is why he left Miami for St. Louis.

If the Dolphins weren’t willing to pay Long that kind of money, it’s hard to see why they’d be willing to give up a second-round draft pick for the privilege of paying Albert that kind of money. So the Dolphins may need to look elsewhere for a left tackle. And Albert may have to settle for playing this season for the Chiefs, making $9.8 million, and hitting free agency next year.

Meanwhile, Miami has exactly dick at LT to protect Tannehill.
And the guy says Miami should be sure to trade down in the 1st to recoup the 2nd they give to KC for Albert? Why the hell do you need to trade down if you're Miami? You didn't give the pick away for free....you got a starting left tackle. Teams (and the media) overrate picks after the first round. If you can get a good, reasonably young left tackle for less than a first round pick, that's a nice deal.

The Miami Herald reports Branden Albert is in fact targeting more money than the Rams paid Jake Long.
Yahoo previously reported Albert wanted in the range of Long money ($8.5 million annually), but it sounds like he wants $9 million a year or more. In annual average, the highest paid left tackle in football is Joe Thomas at $11.5 million. The highest paid guard is Carl Nicks ($9.5 million). Albert's franchise tender is worth $9.828 million contract, so he may be using that as a starting point.

Posted this because they show how much Joe Thomas gets. Wow Albert man, you don't have a market.

I would like to make two unrelated points.

1st: The Albert-or-bust Patrol in this thread have simultaneously claimed that LT is too devalued to justify selecting at 1.1, and that Albert should be paid Top 5 at his position. That's a contradiction.

2nd: If Albert cannot get a deal done with Miami, you're not going to bring him down this offseason. Keep him tagged, threaten him with the tag next offseason (nobody is becoming a free agent that really warrants it other than him), and try to negotiate with him again.

You're probably not going to get Albert to come down right now. Or come down much. You probably can get him to come down after taking a break from negotiations for the 2013 season.

Exactly - he doesn't plus he's not worth it. In fact his Franchise Tender salary is worth more by defination than he is in ability -

If we draft Joeckel, why does he have to start at RT instead of LT? If he is the future at LT, and Albert isn't, why move Joeckel from his natural spot for one season?

Why in the hell would Miami let Jake Long walk only to give up a second round pick for the right to pay similar money to a similar player?

Similarly, why would the Chiefs let Albert go for a second round pick only to spend the top pick in the draft on his replacement?

None of this passes the smell test, IMO...which means it will almost certainly come to pass. Such is my lot in life as a Chiefs fan.

Branden Albert's price tag needs to 'come down significantly' for Miami Dolphins to remain interested

It's just money. It's not like baseball or the NBA where it cripples your franchise if you pay a guy that much. The Chiefs would clearly like to use that for other purposes, but if push came to shove, it's not that much of a sacrifice.

The 1.1 pick, meanwhile, shouldn't be pissed away. It has FAR more value than a handful of salary cap millions on an overbloated contract.
