Options at Safety this offseason

Yeah, I'm still pissed off at Lewis. Like everyone else, I can't wait to see his sorry ass off this team. But looking forward, who can we replace him with?

Haha Clinton-Dix is the only real option in the draft, and he'll be gone by our pick.

Here are the FA Safeties

Nate Allen PHI
Yeremiah Bell ARI
Antoine Bethea IND
Jarius Byrd BUF
Ryan Clark PIT
Chris Crocker CIN
TJ Ward CLE
Michael Huff DEN
Malcolm Jenkins NO
Taylor Mays CIN
Brandon Merriweather WAS
Quinten Mikell CAR
Donte Whitner SF
Usama Young OAK

Anyone think we can snag one of those guys? Will we have the money?

What's your point?

I wasn't saying we should tag him, just that the franchise tag amount is under 7million. That's a realistic value of what Berrys value is to this team IMO.

I hit in 25 tries.

Still would be an upgrade over Lewis.

Part of the problem is managing the cap and how much money KC invests in the safety position.

Eric Berry has two more years on his contract with a cap number of $11,619,700 for 2104 and $8,357,700.00 for 2015.

Jairus Byrd would be good, but what would be the cap dollar cost?

Strong Safety Nate Allen would have the Philadelphia/Andy Reid connection, but again not sure what he will command in a contract? Also can Nate shift to Free Safety? T.J. Ward is a very good free agent safety but he too is a strong safety and will get a pretty good contract. Interesting side note, Byrd, Allen and Ward were all 2nd round draft picks. We’ve already traded that pick away, so we don’t have that option.

KC will probably look at cheaper alternatives.

Allow Kendrick Lewis to leave through free agency since his contract is up

Re-sign Quintin Demps to a longer term contract. I like him for special teams and in Sutton’s defense, he plays a lot.

Maybe Sanders Commings can be developed into a good safety for Kansas City. 6’0”, 223 lbs, 4.4 40 yard dash, and CB skills, makes him an attractive possibility.

I think we also use a 3rd or 4th round pick to try and improve at that position.
agreed, Demps has value at Special Teams and also could develop into a servicable player with more coaching and playing time.

Him and Berry are the only Safties I keep from this year.

Bowe and Hemingway are the only WRs I keep, but that's a different thread.

cant stand pat for sure and cant rely on anyone on the roster.

Must either draft or pick somebody up in FA.

I'd go after Byrd and cut elsewhere, since there isn't projected to be a decent player where we will draft at the end of the 1st round.

How to pay for him is by letting Asamoah, Albert, Lewis and Dexter all go.

Draft a stud TE or WR in the 1st and then get a OG in the 3rd.

I'd keep Dex, he's proven his value on returns and can be decent utility depth.

It was pretty obvious last game that we needed Albert. Stephenson got man handled by Mathis every play.

Stephenson did just fine. Not too many lts can block Mathis.

Haha is the 18th rated player on the espn top 100 board.

If we have a chance to draft that kid, we should.

I think Clinton Dix will be gone before we have a chance to draft him.

His combine will decide it. He could certainly drop to around the Chiefs' pick, but a good combine could land him in the top 15 or even 10.

It's the time of the year when franchises talk themselves out of proven players and fall in love with physical attributes. The next 5 months will see players move all over the board.
