Gailey defends Johnson block on Berry

http://chiefsblog.kansascity.com/?q=node/1816

Buffalo coach Chan Gailey has defended the cut block by Bills wide receiver Stevie Johnson that caused a season-ending knee injury to Chiefs strong safety Eric Berry in Sunday's game.

"It was a clean block," Gailey told reporters in Buffalo on Monday. We tell our guys: 'You go block those guys.' Because let me tell you, if you’re up in the air they’re not going to hesitate to get you and take a shot at you because they’re trying to separate you from the ball.

"That’s an opportunity for our receivers to go down the field and hit those guys. It’s legal. It happened in front of me on the sideline in front of an official.

"To me it’s not that. It wasn’t the only person we went down and cut down field. It wasn’t the only time we did it. I don’t see any basis for that."

Gailey allowed that the departure of Berry opened things up for Bills' tight ends David Nelson (four catches, 64 yards) and Scott Chandler, who had a career day (five catches for 63 yards, including two for touchdowns) in the Bills' 41-7 romp.

"I think some of the balls David Nelson caught, that’s where Berry would have been and we ended up on either Jon (McGraw) or we ended up on (Sabby) Piscitelli. And that was the matchup that Fitz (Ryan Fitzpatrick) went to which was smart."

Don't think there's too much bad blood between Gailey and Chiefs coach Todd Haley, who unceremoniously fired him in 2009, is there?

I'll never understand why they take some of the BS gratuitous shots they do. There is just absolutely no professional respect in the NFL.

What Steve Johnson did was legal - it was also bullshit. These guys all know the dangers of going at knees (especially WRs), but ol' Stevie didn't give a damn when he dove at a fellow ballplayers knees.

I'm generally above wishing an injury on someone...but I damn sure wouldn't be sorry to see it.
Agreed but when will it change? During talks or 10 years from now.

If they hated it so much- why did they let it go this year? Yeah money and worried like most Americans.

**** that shit. if worried, fix it now or 10 years from now.

LEGAL. per NFL. No changes cause it was a "safety"

I am pissed but also l know the truth.

Safety's only matter when they take out a QB.......

Then new rules.

Yeah, I think Chan had these guys pretty stoked up for this game. He also endorsed the hit and stood behind him, as you would expect.

Maybe you should go back and look at them? Priest was on the ground when Roidman speared him, Trent Green was also helpless in a feet first slide, when he was hit.

The one Sunday should be fresh enough for you to remember.
