Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price

Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price
Posted by Michael David Smith on April 21, 2013, 6:46 PM EDT
Branden Albert AP

The much-discussed potential trade of Branden Albert from the Chiefs to the Dolphins doesn’t appear likely at the price Albert is currently seeking.

Although the Chiefs and Dolphins can probably agree on compensation — the Dolphins sending a second-round pick to Kansas City — the hangup is that Albert wants the kind of money that the Dolphins aren’t willing to spend. Specifically, according to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports, Albert wants between $8 million and $9 million a year on a long-term deal.

In other words, Albert is looking for the same kind of contract that left tackle Jake Long got from the Rams — the very contract the Dolphins wouldn’t give Long, which is why he left Miami for St. Louis.

If the Dolphins weren’t willing to pay Long that kind of money, it’s hard to see why they’d be willing to give up a second-round draft pick for the privilege of paying Albert that kind of money. So the Dolphins may need to look elsewhere for a left tackle. And Albert may have to settle for playing this season for the Chiefs, making $9.8 million, and hitting free agency next year.

I said I don't know if it will improve the team.

This isn't like upgrading from Mike Brown to Eric Berry or Damien McIntosh to Branden Albert. This is an already solid, adequate, and good player at starting LT that is being booted out the door all so we can draft in the name of "value" at the top of the draft.

It's a shitty move that places HUGE expectations and pressure on Joeckel/Fisher to play lights out. It's almost no different than drafting Tyson Jackson at #3 overall-- the amount of pressure and expectation placed on Jackson to play lights out was very high in order for him to be worth that top 5 selection.

This is basically what you're looking at.

Pay a lot of money to the 17th ranked LT who is injured basically every year and has never made a pro bowl

or

Take a highly ranked LT (who IMO will be better than 17th) who was never injured in college for cheap $$ and use that extra 9 or 10 million to secure the most productive young defensive player on the team.

I don't think this is a tough choice.
Injured every year? Why did we just trade for a QB who is injured MORE?

Enough with that bullshit.

With trading Albert and upgrading it with the first overall pick in the entire draft, the LT needs to be a significant upgrade.

If he's as good of a prospect as Jake Long, he needs to be a top 5-7 LT right out of the gate with the ability to be better.

Albert is "injured every year" but somehow has logged more than 900 snaps every year but one.

From 2008 to 2011 he averaged 997 snaps per season, or 65.4 snaps per game (61 games)

That really sounds like an injury prone player you STUPID MOTHER ****ING HOMERS.

#1 - If the Chiefs pass on Geno, fine. But they sure as shit better find a young QB who is better in the next 2-3 years. Who knows. Maybe the Chiefs have a young guy they really like later in the draft.

If that happens, it really doesn't matter if Joeckl is better than Albert.

OTs don't take time to develop. They are like linebackers, they usually hit the ground running if they are any good.

Neither Alex Smith or Joeckel should get a free year.

They need to play at a high level right away.

If we take a LT with the first pick in the draft, as well as these guys are regarded and graded, they better be an upgrade and lock down the spot for 10 years.

I don't see how RunKC can keep beating the injury drum when he defends giving trading for a QB who has finished only 2 seasons in his career. Since he was drafted, the 49ers have played 128 games. Alex Smith has started only 75 of them. Meaning he's started less than 60% of the games since he was drafted.

Think about that for a second.

You know this won't matter.

If Joeckel is subpar this season "give it time!" "he was a rookie!" "he needs a new OL coach!"

**** that.

He's billed as extremely pro ready, excel in any offense type of guy. He needs to be better than Matt Kalil last year atleast.

Alex Smith got hurt with Joe Staley and Anthony Davis as his bookend tackles what do you thinks going to happen with a rookie LT and a nobody with zero experience at RT.

Well, hopefully we don't stick our LT at RG and say go.

We should have kept Jared Allen and paid the sumbitch and had a HOF DE playing for this team for his whole career.

Instead we got a few decent years out of some good players and dumped them, won nothing, and we're left with Charles.

Mother**** you King Carl, Scott Pioli and John Dorsey.

Once we went to the 34, Dorsey was squashed.
