What is your "prized possession"?

During the discussion on the DC board there was a debate on whether you should be able to kill someone stealing your stuff. I won't get back to that but I did want to know: what is your #1 possession you own? I.e., what would you walk through fire to retrieve?

I can honestly say I don't even have one. I wouldn't care if my house burnt down. I really changed many years ago when I had my first child. At that point I didn't give a squirt about anything I owned. Truth.

The closest thing I have would be my ball glove given to me by my dad when I was 7. It was autographed by Catfish Hunter (for those who don't remember he was good in the 70s). Maybe it will take on greater significance when my dad passes since he's quite old now.

Anyway here's a photo of the model:

The greatest things in life for me aren't material. Life changes a person so much. It took me a long time to find out. I have two beautiful kids and my prized possession is being there when they were born and holding them in my arms.

If my house burned to the ground, I'd still have that memory.

My uncle is like this - doesn't have a sentimental bone in his body. His house in Lee's Summit was destroyed by a microburst back in the 90s. He and my aunt survived unscathed, and while the house and pretty much everything in it was a loss, he got a brand new house filled with brand new stuff on the existing foundation, paid for by the insurance company. Says it's the best thing that ever happened to him.

I don't think I'd feel that way.

I say that full well knowing my house never burned down. And I'm probably lying to myself.

People mistake having things with needing them. "Can I have your car then?" is a dumb question because it's confusing the want and the need. You pretty much have to drive a car in society, doesn't mean it's sentimental to you. Same with a house: if mine burned down I woudln't like it, and it would inconvenience me sure. So while I do value them, it's only so I can live. I wouldn't care if they were replaced.

I had a Catfish Hunter card when I was a kid. I had tons of cards...but now...somehow....I don't have very many....and Catfish is gone.

as long as my family and pets were safe, then and only then would I rush back into the flames to retrieve my baby.

Alright, my testicle WAS pretty important...before it became my dog's favorite possession of course.

I wouldn't mind a microburst blowing my shit away as long as my family was safe. Of course, it is easy to say that since I have good insurance. I'd make sure my wife understood we would have a lot less "stuff." "Things" don't matter, they are only tools to help your family have a better life. I can do without the "things" but I can't do without my family.

Nice display, you younger guys are sooo much luckier in many ways... while many of the newer cards wont have the real value because of the glut of brands and products out there, the good cards that you can find are freaking KILLER.

Pieces of used game balls, helmets, jerseys, personally signed stuff... when you get the right one of THOSE, you've really got some great memorabilia.

You wouldn't believe how little all that is worth too! I have thousands of cards, some that used to be work hundreds of dollars like my Jerry Rice rookie card (Now $25!). Now most are worth nothing to a few bucks. I was looking to sell mine but it honestly wasn't worth the time to get rid of most of them seeing what I would get back. I would keep some of the autograph and game jersey cards of players I like, but even the ones of players I don't give two shits about just aren't worth anything anymore. And to think of how much I spent to get all of those cards!

I'm sticking to strictly autographed and authenticated memorabilia from now on like bats, balls and jerseys.

Yep, thats the only way to go anymore Lew, buy the pieces that you already know are going to be worth something... the days of finding a gold nugget in your bubblegum pack are pretty much looong gone.

Its become big business and not just a fun, quaint hobby.
