NFL hot seat rankings

NFL hot seat rankings: Colts' Chuck Pagano leads list of coaches who could be in trouble The NFL season is now a week old, but we all know it's not unheard of for teams to make coaching changes as early as September. Will the axe fall somewhere this month? Probably not. But will the proverbial coaching hot seats warm up as the autumn temperatures cool? Inevitably. Here's this season's initial installment of our weekly hot seat rankings: 1. Chuck Pagano, Indianapolis Colts: His team didn't look capable of beating the Los Angeles Rams even if Andrew Luck had been fully healthy and at the top of his game. Luck's health is obviously a major key to Indy's fortunes, but this club has been in steady decline since blowing the whistle on Deflategate, going 16-17 since the 2014 AFC Championship Game. That's not entirely Pagano's fault, but former GM Ryan Grigson has already been ousted. And showings like Sunday's 46-9 stinker certainly won't endear Pagano to first-year GM Chris Ballard, who may eventually decide he needs his own guy on the sideline. 2. John Fox, Chicago Bears: The rumor mill would have you believe that Fox and GM Ryan Pace do not see eye to eye, and it hit overdrive after Pace's stunning move to acquire the No. 2 selection of this year's draft to get QB Mitchell Trubisky. But there's no sidestepping Fox's 9-24 record in Chicago, either, even if the Bears gave the NFC champion Atlanta Falcons all they could handle Sunday. Unless the Bears turn the corner with veteran QB Mike Glennon, it's hard to envision Trubisky being the guy who can salvage Fox's tenure. 3. Marvin Lewis, Cincinnati Bengals: His deal expires after this season. He's never won a playoff game in 14 seasons and didn't even reach postseason last year. And, most concerning, his club laid a Week 1 goose egg for their lame duck coach. Not a good way to get another contract, even for a guy who's enjoyed owner Mike Brown's loyalty since 2003. 4. Todd Bowles, New York Jets: His roster doesn't have 53 NFL-caliber talents on it, seemingly by design. The real questions seem to be 1) Will Bowles want to hang around after this slog of a season? and/or 2) Do the Jets see him at the helm as they embark on what appears to be a lengthy rebuild? 5. Hue Jackson, Cleveland Browns: His team gave the Pittsburgh Steelers a spirited battle Sunday, further evidence Jackson has the Browns finally pointed in the right direction. But it's worth wondering if a franchise not known for patience will let him see his long-term vision through. 6. Ben McAdoo, New York Giants: He had a strong maiden voyage in 2016, leading New York back to the playoffs. But the weather can change quickly in New York, and McAdoo's offense, which lacked injured WR Odell Beckham Jr. on Sunday night, was still shockingly inept against a middling Dallas Cowboys D. The Giants better improve quickly, or the tabloids will be calling for McAdoo's newly coiffed head soon enough. 7. Bill O'Brien, Houston Texans: He's guided a flawed roster to three consecutive 9-7 finishes, the last two good enough for AFC South crowns. But this team's obvious weakness is the quarterback position, and O'Brien hasn't been able to fix it — which was apparent again Sunday. He's earned time to develop rookie Deshaun Watson, who seems to be the best hope O'Brien's had for a solution. But if the Texans crater, and Watson doesn't make strides over the course of the season, O'Brien might find himself in jeopardy. |

Lewis has always been on the perpetual hot seat. He must have some dirt on the GM because he always manages to survive.

I think Pagano still has more of an excuse (Luck injury) built into his cause than Marvin Lewis and Ben McAdoo have.
Fox has to be really close as well…despite the QB situation. |

Mike Brown, the owner, has been the de facto GM since his father, Paul Brown, founder of the Browns and Bengals, died. Marvin Lewis has been the longest tenured coach in Bengals history because he’s brought them, up until recently, their most sustained success. |

Ben McAdoo (1-7): McAdoo is a stark example of how quickly things can change in the NFL. He went from a playoff appearance in year one to a complete implosion a year later. The Giants are a disaster, and will be finishing the year in the Top 5 for next year’s draft. Defensive players have been in near-open revolt. He’s losing the locker room, and the GM is likely to be replaced as well. Hue Jackson (0-8): He’s 1-23 as the head coach in Cleveland and somehow last week’s bye week was a more embarrassing L for the organization than any of the previous 23. Yes, the front office is a mess, but if your solution now is to push for a trade for AJ McCarron, maybe it’s time to move on. Dirk Koetter (2-6): Koetter was the continuation hire, the offensive coordinator promoted as Lovie Smith was shown the door. He’s not young, and this team is not getting better. 2017 has been a disaster and I’m not sure what Koetter has done to suggest he should be a NFL coach. Marvin Lewis (3-5): Marvin Lewis is probably safe because (shrug) Mike Brown. In the normal NFL universe, you don’t get to coach one team for 15 years with zero playoff wins. It is looking more and more like 2017 will end a lot like 2016, under .500. Chuck Pagano (3-5): Yes, the Colts have three wins without Andrew Luck. Those have come against the three other teams that could be considered among the worst in the league, all in close fashion: the Browns, the 49ers, and any team quarterbacked by Tom Savage. John Fox (3-5): The Bears have looked competent at times (we’ll ignore that game in Tampa) and have pulled out some wins that they had no business of getting based on the offense. But this is what Fox does. I’m not sure a 5-11 or 6-10 season is going to inspire the fanbase in Chicago. Vance Joseph (3-5): Yes, it’s year one. But I’m not sure the Denver Broncos organization, in the current state of where the team is with a defense, is going to tolerate an implosion. I’m not saying that he’s in danger right now. I am saying that a woeful conclusion to the season wouldn’t rule out a change after just one year. Mike McCarthy (4-4): So here’s the deal with McCarthy. Of course he’s not in trouble yet. But if this thing sans Aaron Rodgers goes way south, I don’t think it’s out of the question that he should be facing some music. Look, if your entire argument for being a coach is that your team looks like the Cleveland Browns when you don’t have one of the best quarterbacks of all-time, but you can make the playoffs with him, I mean, who can’t do that? If Green Bay looks incompetent (and I think there’s a decent chance that they are an underdog in every game, including at Cleveland), questions will be asked. |

Ted Thompson will assuredly step down before long, but the Packers will never fire him. A lot of competition for that job.
Joseph is a first year guy with a shit turd stable of QB's, he's getting more than a year. Quote:

NFL Coach Hot Seats: McAdoo Is Out, Who Could Be Next? Ben McAdoo was the first to go. The Giants’ decision to fire their second-year coach kicks off a month of misery for struggling coaching staffs around the NFL, and a crass conversation piece for league onlookers. Who will be next? At the moment, all we know for sure is that several more are likely to go—there have been at least five coaching vacancies open up every season going back to 2010. Here are the coaches who appear to be most at-risk after Week 13. THE HOTTEST SEATS John Fox (12-32 in Chicago): Like the Giants’ brass, Bears leadership doesn’t panic often. In fact, Chicago has never fired a coach in-season. But Fox is almost certainly out after this year, his power declining in the Windy City ever since management went over his head in trading up to draft Mitchell Trubisky. After three losing seasons, Fox currently has the worst winning percentage in Bears history (.273). Hue Jackson (1-27 in Cleveland): FiveThirtyEight currently gives the Browns a 46% chance of going 0-16. But even if Cleveland gets a win (possibly over the Brett Hundley-led Packers team this weekend), it is becoming increasingly difficult to imagine Jackson coming back. He may not even want to, given the rift that has seemingly developed between him and a front office more focused on on acquiring future assets rather than building up the current roster. Chuck Pagano (52-39 in Indianapolis): Sunday’s 30-10 loss in Jacksonville ensured the Colts will finish with a losing record for the first time under Pagano. A lack of player development and lackluster results in close games this season will likely cost him a chance to redeem himself in Indianapolis. With Andrew Luck in the fold, this team was supposed to rule the AFC South for a decade. Instead, Luck is hurt, and the Colts are now looking up at three rising contenders. KEEP AN EYE ON Vance Joseph (3-9 in Denver): Joseph started his rookie coaching campaign 3-1. The Broncos have lost eight straight since then, and at least one local columnist is now telling fans to boycott the games. That’s the kind of chaos it normally takes for a coach to lose his job after one season. And offensive coordinator Mike McCoy didn’t even last that long. Dirk Koetter (13-15 in Tampa Bay): Koetter was promoted to head coach in 2016 mainly to help Jameis Winston develop into an elite quarterback. The fact that Winston currently boasts a 12-to-6 TD-to-INT ratio, and the Bucs sit at 4-8, does not bode well. Marvin Lewis (123-109 in Cincinnati): The Bengals seem destined to finish at or around .500 this year, and Lewis’s contract expires at the end of the season. Could Vontaze Burfict’s myriad fiascos and Andy Dalton’s stalled development (he’s currently 26th in QBR) be enough to convince Mike Brown to move on from the league’s second-longest tenured coach? Or will Lewis get a chance to improve on his 0-7 playoff record? (Or will Lewis make the decision for Brown by retiring at season’s end?) Jason Garrett (64-52 in Dallas): Injuries and the Ezekiel Elliott suspension would be more than just about any coach could overcome, and Thursday’s win over Washington certainly helped Garrett’s case. But Dallas does not currently have a win over a team with a winning record, and if they falter down the stretch, Jerry Jones could start looking for his own Sean McVay. COACHING HIS WAY INTO ANOTHER YEAR Todd Bowles (20-24 in New York): Going into the year, Bowles was considered a lame duck. But leading what is considered to be one of the least talented rosters in football, he’s fought to a respectable 5-7 record, thanks in part to offensive coordinator John Morton’s ability to build a league-average offense around Josh McCown. At this point, New York might be out of the running for one of next year's top QB prospects, postponing a total rebuild. |
