Car repair - brakes buzzing
Help. I could really use the Planet's vast knowledge right about now.

I have a 2005 Hyundai Sante Fe 3.5L. I just replaced the rotors and brake pads on the front. It was driving fine and the brakes were working fine. But the ABS and TCS lights were on for some reason.

A little while later the wife started driving it and the brakes were kind of grinding. Well, not grinding. More like buzzing. It also lost most braking power. The ABS and TCS lights were no longer on.

I have taken everything apart and put it back together again a couple of additional times and still can't find the problem.

This seems to be an intermittent problem. It doesn't always happen right away. But almost always seems to show up if I stop, turn off the engine, and then start it up and drive again.

Is this something I can fix or should I take it to my mechanic? I am okay with basic repairs but don't have the tools or know how for anything more complex.

No kinking. I use zip ties to attach the calipers out of the way until I put everything back together.

Apparently not, Im sure he has half a brain, why would you insult him like that. Yes brakes are not difficult but clearly there is a way to make things worse.

It is definitely a problem with the ABS, that will also set the TCS light. Check the wires to the wheel speed senosrs, when you zip tied the calipers back you may have pulled one of the wheel speed sensors wires out of place.

I doubt its a broken tone ring or the problem would have been there before the brake replacement.

I had a Nissan Maxima with a similar problem. The problem was associated with the ABS system. At slow speeds, when applying the brake the ABS system would kick in because the speed sensor thought the brakes were locking up....dirt on the lense of the sensor, I guess. Maxima problem and design issue but zero recalls. The friendly people as Nissan would fix the problem for 4000 bucks. Anyway the cleaning the sensor lense would help the issue but would not eliminate it. If it goes on a long time, you will screw up other components that you don't want to replace. At least not in this lifetime.

You are haivng problems with your speed sensor. Either when replace that stuff you messed it up or some vehicles require that sensor to be realigned when the rotors are replaced.
You will have to take it to a pro.

Thanks for all the input. Looks like the sensor and/or the tone wheel are common issues with this vehicle. I have my mechanic scheduled to look at it tomorrow.

So I'm reusing this thread to ask a question about a car I'm looking at buying. It's a 2009 Subaru Forrester 2.5T (turbo) with 29K miles. Now, I was about ready to start talking numbers when the manager comes out and show me the carfax that says:

Frontend collision
Airbag deployed
Engine replaced
Possible structural damage

He also shows me a report from another service (Carcheck maybe?) that says nothing has happened to it. The title is clean, so its not salvaged. So I have several questions.

1. Is it possible for a car to have been totaled by an insurance company and still have a clean title?
2. How much does it usually cost to have a body shop check a car for structural damage?

I mean, for the engine to have been replaced and the airbag to deploy, it had to be a fairly serious accident, no?
