Firebug Grill'n Sauce wins American Royal 2013 Contest

My pal Mr. Doggity says Firebug just won the 1st place for the American Royal Sauce competition. We've talked about it here on our site many times. It's great stuff. Here's their facebook page:

The sauces had to be turned in for judging about a week ago. I think they just announced the sauce results today, in advance of the meat competition this weekend coming up. Meats will be judged over the weekend contest.

I don't think he won anything. The category Shannon won was "Tomato-Hot" category of sauce, according to Mr. Doggity.

Doggity said his sauce came in #32 out of more than 300 entries. That's not bad.

And the good thing is, they have the contest every year, and the judges change. So each year, it depends on what judges personal tastes are. He can enter again next year, along with all the other hopefuls.

How is this sauce versus Rufus Teague Touch o' Heat? That's the best sauce I've tasted maybe ever.

Next time I go to BBQ's Galore, I'll ask them to order some. They had Rufus Teague, a generous batch of Gates & Bryants, Stubb's and others but I haven't seen Firebug.

Thanks for the tip!

It has infinitely more complex flavor that Rufus Teagues Heat. Not even close IMO. The thing I love about Firebug is that the flavor is really complex. Lots of different flavors going on. They actually use a lot of fruit in the sauce to go along with the spices and heat, and it's a very tasty combination. Firebug Hot is my favorite Hot BBQ sauce, behind Cowtown Night of the Living Sauce.. Which is another that's leagues above Teagues. Those two are money for Hot BBQ sauce...

Cool, thanks for the info! I'll have to check them out the next time I'm in KC. I actually feel fortunate that I can at least get Gates and R.T. locally.

You can usually get it at McGonigals. I think A Thyme For Everything in Downtown LS carries it but it's pricey there.

It was a bit pricey at Hy-Vee (4.99 or 5.49 a bottle or some such). Will have to check out McGonigals next time I am out by Ward Parkway.

Thanks for the info!
