*.* 2013 General Fitness Thread *.*

Welcome to 2013! Now get your ass in top physical condition!

**From the 2012 Thread**

If you want to get back into lifting, or need a new lifting routine, START HERE:

http://startingstrength.wikia.com/wi...inner_Programs

If you have questions about the SS programs, look here:

http://startingstrength.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ

Keep in mind that you're a novice lifter for a longer period of time than you think you are. Novice lifting can last anywhere from a few months to a year or two, depending on how hard you hit the weights and where you started.

Once you've reached the point where you don't make regular progress on the SS program, you are ready to move on to the intermediate stage, which can last you for a good number of years. Find it HERE:

http://madcow.hostzi.com/5x5_Program/Linear_5x5.htm

If you're a very advanced lifter (many, many years of CONSISTENT weight training), then there are lot of programs out there, and which one you pick is simply a matter of preference. If you're really that advanced, you should know what works for you and what doesn't by this point.

Comments like yours are where the cross fit resentment comes from. Spewing out reeruned terms like 'usable' or 'functional' strength. Give me a break.

Crossfit was around when I was in highschool, we just called it calisthenics.
I play sports against focused lifters, and raw strength just doesn't translate efficiently. If I'm boxing against a sparring partner who spends most of his training time in the weight room, it's not even a fair fight.

Sure, I run the risk of getting knocked across the ring, but it never happens. I'm so much quicker it's silly. A few minutes in, when his stamina is a liability, it's open season.

There really is a reason that most professional athletes look more like cross fit champions than Mr. Olympia.

That's not meant to denigrate pure lifters in any way. Lifting is specialized. Cross-fit is versatile. There are more real-world applications in my life for cross fit. That may be different for you.

That's because being muscular is not an advantage in combat sports because of loss of flexiblity and muscle requires more oxygen so you fatigue quicker.

So you think most NFL players look more like people that crossfit? What about sprinters? What did McGwire, Bonds, and Sosa look like?

I find that having my size and strength comes in more handy in every day situations. When you are cock strong you are cock strong. It only sucks when people always think "Hey BCD looks like he could lift a house lets call him to help move"

If your a professional athlete, or any athlete for that matter, your training is sport specific. Most NFL players are pretty jacked, because the sport requires both endurance as well as limit strength. If you look at some of the more built crossfit champions, and follow their blog, they lift some heavy ass weight and follow tried and true strength routines. They just use crossfit as a means for the endurance side, which is what it is. This is why so many out of shape people hit crossfit to get in shape, its basically organized group calisthenics. I'm not saying its easy, I just can accomplish the same goals from doing hill sprints or pushing a prowler. When you say pure lifters I think your getting caught up in the dogma of fat, out of shape power lifters. Most strength based programs or even body building for that matter, contains some sort of hard conditioning to take care of the endurance side.

This is really about holistic fitness vs. raw strength.

Some people want strength, power, balance, speed, agility, endurance, and mobility.

Some people just want to be big and strong.

Nothing wrong with either, but it causes snobbery on both sides.

And then there's people that want both, and train hard for both.

we aren't being snobs about it, just questioning why it was stated that 'weightroom strength doesn't translate to real world application', when in fact, it does.

I'm pretty sure strength, power, balance and speed can also go with big and strong (Ben Johnson, Maurice Greene?). They aren't mutually exclusive. Endurance and mobility probably although I'm not even sure about endurance. The former Mr. Missouri at my gym does about 45 mintues on a step mill at contest time. That's a bitch to do.

Ben Johnson isn't the kind of big I'm talking about as far as only concerned about size and strength.

Right. But also guys who work the shit out of their upper body whole neglecting legs. Just seems like lots of stereotypes flying around on both sides. I just sort of straddle the debate, I guess.

But yeah, only a finite amount of time in gym. If your goal is getting swole up, the you probably aren't spending time on shit like sprints and plyo metrics not to mention flexibility.

That being said, if you want all those other things too, you probably are spending time on the others at the cost of size and strength.

There's no perfect program. I say do what motivates a person o get off their ass and into shape, regardless of what that shape mgt be.

I'm more of a body sculpting hardcore free weight guy so when in doubt I just ask myself WWAD? (What Would Arnold Do?)

Its all about what you want to do and makes you happy. When I was younger it was all about size and strength.

Now I am more into overall fitness.

Thisyear i have benched 300lbs which isn't anything special but its more than 90% of the male population can do.

A few weeks later I ran a marathon in 3:3:32 which isn't anything thats overly impressive but I was in the top 10% or better of finishers at a marathon with 2750 entered.

I know many people aren't that into running, I enjoy it. Many people I run with don't lift at all. I enjoy it.

This next year I plan to get stronger and faster. Those are my goals.

As NewChief said, anything to get your ass off the couch.

Edit: And both activities allow me to drink a lot of beer without being a fatass.

The Ben Johnson reference sort of proves my point. Sprinting gets you ripped. Lifting doesn't make you fast.

You don't see athletes who look like Arnold playing professional sports. You DO see professional athletes who are built like Shaun T.

You can have too much bulk for specific tasks. You can't have too much speed, agility, endurance, flexibility, etc.

So you think Ben got those guns by sprinting huh?

Yes, you can get TOO bulky to play a sport AKA David Boston, but that's really rare and you aren't looking like that naturally anyways. You seem to have MMA/Boxing in mind when you create your post and I agree with you in those instances. There, however, is a great benefit to being explosive and getting those fast twitch muscle fibers in most other sports as well.

A great MMA example is Vitor Belort. He's is a guy that is a walking ball of muscle which is uncommon for fighters. The benefit is that he is explosive as hell for the first round or two of a fight, however he does gas easy later on so it's a trade off. Do you want to lose some explosiveness in exchange for endurance? Strength and muscle does have it's place.

I agree completely.

Let me put it another way to hopefully clarify what I mean.

If you had Shaun T and Mr. Olympia standing side by side and asked 1,000 people which one they think might play professional baseball, basketball, football, golf, tennis, etc., almost everyone is going to guess Shaun.

Square them off in the decathlon...who do you think wins?
