Just saved $60/month on my cable/internet bill.

In case this helpful information for anyone else with cable TV.

I just went back to school to finish my PhD and as a result, we are cutting some costs. I had been looking around at cutting $$ from our $160/month cable and internet bundle with Cox.

I had settled on Dish Network + DSL mostly for the price. So I called up Cox to chat with their retention sales people and see what sort of deal I could get.

Turns out that Cox (and I assume other cable companies) are holding back a really deep discount. I cut my cable portion of my bill by 50% with one call. And I'm keeping the same service level.

The deal is that with Dish Network and DirecTV, you are committing to a 2 year contract. And cable companies (Cox at least) advertise that they don't require contracts as a benefit. But what I didn't realize is that you can ask for a 2 year contract just like the satellite companies require and Cox will give you a steep discount for agreeing to one.

So the cable portion of my bill was $99. And that included an HDDVR for 1 TV. After contract the cable portion of my bill was $60 (for the 1st year). Same service level. Plus included in that price was a 2nd HD box ($18 lease fee). Without the discount my bill would have been about $115/120.

So I dropped by cable rate by nearly 50%. Kept the same service. Added a 2nd HD TV.... all by agreeing to a 2 year contract with a company I've been with for 10+ years.

Give it a shot.

Less interesting but also good news is that I also dropped my internet speed from 22MB/s to 18MB/s and saved another $15/month ($65 vs $50).

Back when we first signed up with Cox 10 years ago, the cost was $50/month and you got about 5-10 MB/s. They've apparently been increasing the speed and price over the years. I would have dropped it more but they only have a choice between 3MB/s, 18MB/s or 22MB/s. Strange that it's such a large jump there from bottom to middle speeds.

I tried that, and failed. Comcast requires an agreement now, because they are evil as sin. I had to sign up for a year, and to be honest with you, the 2 year one wasn't more than like 7 dollars cheaper. I have 3 DVRs, 3 receivers, phone service, internet, Big 10 network, and I pay about $200 a month.
