Gerrard released

David Garrard - QB - Dolphins
Dolphins released QB David Garrard.

With experienced backup signal-callers such as Seneca Wallace and Brian Hoyer freely available, the Dolphins were unable to land even a late-round pick for Garrard or Matt Moore. Even though Garrard had emerged as the front-runner early in training camp, it made little sense to keep him on the roster at $2.25 million once Ryan Tannehill had been announced as the starter. Expected to be back to full health in a week or two, Garrard shouldn't be out of work for very long.

Yea yea he's always hurt, but he's much better than Cassel, I'm game. Anyone else?

My point is that a player can look like shit on someone else's team but as soon as there is a possibility you could have they suddenly look different and better. Sometimes. Even though the shouldn't.

I just enjoy the fact that people are clamoring for 3rd or 4th string guys off teams with shaky QB situations to begin with. I can't wait until we finally make the leap where Stanzi goes from the great hope that isn't getting a fair shake from Pioli, to the hated guy who Pioli refuses to cut because he was hand picked to be the backup QB.

Hey boys and girls! Guess what time it is?

That's right! It's time for another episode of Compare Matt Cassel To A Completely Average Quarterback And Watch Him Look Like Shit In Comparison!

Come on down, David Garrard!

Last 58 games: 63 percent completion percentage, 215 yards per game, 7.15 yards per attempt, 71 TD, 41 INT

How does Catt Massel stack up?

Last 55 games: 59 percent completion percentage, 208 yards per game, 6.62 yards per attempt, 74 TD, 43 INT.

Question: which one of these quarterbacks got a big honkin' contract and then told his fanbase to shut the **** up?

Not included: the 1,000 yards rushing and 11 TD Garrard added with his legs.

Which of these QBs is 34 and was recently injured and underwent surgery?

It certainly wasn't David Garrard's on-field performance that got him cut Tuesday from the Miami Dolphins.

The reason Miami let go of its best quarterback in spring practices and training camp was his lack of durability. It's that simple.

The Dolphins couldn't trust the 34-year-old quarterback to stay healthy. He missed all of 2011 with a back injury and tweaked his knee while playing with his children at home. That knee tweak required surgery.

If Garrard needed surgery playing while taking it easy at home, imagine him taking hits from 300-pound defensive linemen? That had to weigh into Miami's thinking.

As a result, the Dolphins chose Matt Moore as the backup to rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill. Moore was not the better fit for Miami's offense. But Moore is younger and without injury concerns. Health matters in the NFL, and in this case, more than performance.

If health and age didn't catch up to Garrard, he probably would be Miami's starting quarterback Sunday against the Houston Texans. But age catches up to everyone in the NFL. Garrard was the latest victim.

Cutting Garrard also means Miami's probably will stop fielding offers for Moore. The veteran quarterback, who went 6-3 in his final nine starts last season, had some trade value. Perhaps the Dolphins could've gotten a wide receiver or a future draft pick for Moore.

But Tannehill, Moore and a developing Pat Devlin aren't a bad trio of quarterbacks to take into the season. This is one of the few areas of depth on Miami's 2012 roster.

You do have to admit it's funny that there's a QB on the market who is statistically superior to our current starter, who pwned Cassel while playing with dogshit talent in Jacksonville, and we will make 0 effort to sign him.

Sign Garrard, make Quinn the 3rd QB.

What do you have to lose?

I actually think Garrard at his peak might have been better than Cassel. I don't know that GoChiefs argument helps that at all though... they look pretty similar actually when you look at it. Cassel at his peak might have actually been better.

Garrard's biggest claim to fame is he went toe to toe with the undefeated Patriots for one half in a playoff game. Otherwise there's really not much to write home about.

And really the biggest thing is how does he look now? I didn't watch any of his play in preseason. The guy hasn't played in two years, all those stats mean squat if the guy is a banged up shell of his old self.

Legs that can't pass a team physical.

But let's not let that little tidbit get in the way.
