2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread

2012 Slogan: Our Time

A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year
(from Great Expectations)

An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division
(from alnorth)

With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

Quote:
If you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

That's really the reason, IMO, that our offense has been so poor this year. Yes, Hos has been pretty awful (and had some awful luck) but his RBI total is still pretty significant. Our main problem is that we have two auto-outs in our lineup at C and CF. They either kill a big inning as it's starting to form or never allow an inning to get off the ground. You can't expect to be successful in the AL when you essentially have two slightly above-average pitchers in the lineup.

Assuming or have I missed a big piece of news? If the former, I can understand this mindset

And, yes, Dyson must get the hell out of here.

Starting with spring training, the Royals have been woefully weak up the middle. Catcher hurt, 2B (Gio) didn't even make it out of Spring Training on the big club roster, 2B by committee since (Getz/Gio/Yuni) and CF by committee after Cain got hurt (Cain/Dyson/Meier/Frenchy). Melky in CF would have been much better, but Royals get raped on trades all the time, no big surprise there.

Perez getting hurt really torpedoed this whole season. We miss his defense more than his bat.

The only positive attribute that Dyson has is his speed. He has no idea how to use it though. That speed occasionally allows him to make up for his absolutely horrible jumps/reads on fly balls, but that's about it.

Quintero brings absolutely nothing to the table, other than his willingness to put on catchers gear and receive pitches for 9 innings in 90+ degrees weather.

I meant he won't be back for this season. He had another setback and was sent back to KC to see why his hamstring/groin isn't getting better. Both Bukaty and Goldberg have said on 810 this week that it's likely he won't be back in 2012.

I was a big advocate of letting Gio get playing time up here, but his 9th inning AB on Sunday was the end for me. Which is sad, because I despise Betancourt. Sadly, I have become excited about the return of Getz. He at least tries and pretends to give a shit, which I can't say the same for the latter two mentioned above.

Exactly, and this is why I asked earlier if Colon can be a viable second baseman. Having Escobar at short and those three turds at 2nd almost demands he plays second base if he is able, wouldn't you think?

His final Sunday AB and Alice's AB right before were both brutal. I think Gio may still have a chance, but sending him down to earn his way back up might be the best thing for him now.

I'm afraid Colon may have been another wasted first round pick. He doesn't seem to be generating any kind of buzz, and has kind of plodded his way along in the minors. I think once they got Esky for Greinke, he sort of saw the handwriting on the wall. If I were him, I'd beg to play as much 2B as possible, might be the fast track to KC now. Esky's not going anywhere for a long time.

Hadn't heard that pronouncement, though I was aware of the setback. Huh. Myers to CF and problem solved. Cool.

I'd heard it...but kind of crazy that Perez will likely be back before him. Who would've made that bet when they both got hurt?

Colon was on a tear in Arkansas earlier this year and was quietly being mentioned along with Myers as a call-up to Omaha. From what I've heard, the brain-trust wanted to see if his good month was related to batting in front of Myers or if something had actually clicked with him and he'd figured out how to hit.

Currently batting .288 for the season, with 5 HR's and 24 RBI's. 27 walks to 22 K's. His average was around .325 when Myers was promoted to Omaha.

Myers is currently batting .340 for Omaha, with 9 HR's, 28 RBI's and a .734 slugging. Striking out a lot, but that's expected of a young power hitter. He's walked 3 times and scored all 3 times in today's game.

Odorizzi started today. 5.1IP, 7K's, 1BB, 2ER. Sporting a 2.41 ERA through 6 starts in Omaha thus far. 34 K's to 10 BB's. I think he'll get a few more starts (2/3) and be up here after the AS break. Les Norman was on the radio the other day and said he won't be an injury replacement or anything like that. He said when Odorizzi gets the call-up, it's for the long-term.

His K rate at AAA is actually much better than the small sample size at AA (and more in line with what he did in previous years).

I'll take 150Ks a year if he stills hits .300 and slugs like he is this year.
