2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread

2012 Slogan: Our Time

A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year
(from Great Expectations)

An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division
(from alnorth)

With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

No. I hope that DL is a euphemism for waiver wire at this point.

And Luke Davies, with his 7.36 ERA and career 5.37 ERA, isn't too far behind.

The Royals placed infielder Yuniesky Betancourt on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to Wednesday because of a sprained right ankle. They filled his spot on the roster by promoting infielder Irving Falu from Class AAA Omaha. To create space for Falu on the 40-man roster, the Royals transferred reliever Joakim Soria from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list.

Falu is a 28-year-old switch hitter who was selected in the 21st round of the 2003 draft. He has never been in the majors before and was batting .306 this year at Omaha.

Why not Giavotella? WTH?
What? Soria is out for the year. Why is he on any active roster or even a 15-60 day DL?

I could somewhat understand the thought behind having a Gordon "learn" LF in the minors because he was also struggling at the plate at the same time, so you don't want his offensive failings compounding the difficulty of making defensive adjustments.
The handling of Gio does not make sense. I get that the guy's D is not that good. I could handle demoting him to Omaha when he wasn't hitting (And it was reasonable to have some concerns about his hip). But he's hitting reasonably well in Omaha.

Just don't get it.

I thikn you're right re: Myers. A bump to AAA is coming soon, I think, but I'm fine with them letting him sustain this success for another month or so before moving him up.

Re: Colon... I'd feel a lot better about his numbers at AA if he had put them up LAST year. He needs to start stinging the ball more and get his OBP up a bit (his walk rate is down this year).

I'd be happy with his bat if he could maintain .280/.340/.420 as he advances levels. A .760 OPS is not superstar level, but it plays pretty well at 2B (and would be a considerable upgrade over the Royals' current options).

This is a prospect whom we need to protect, but I'm curious if Frenchy's struggles will expedite the time frame with Myers? These should be mutually exclusive. However, should Myers' promotion happen soon and if he would have a very good 25-30 games at AAA, it might be very, very tempting...

They did it with Perez.

The kid is an extremely advanced hitter and always has been (South Carolina was expecting to plug him into the 3 hole in its lineup). He already has experienced failure and overcome it.

He also has played 10 games in CF and started there 5 nights in a row (including two with the scouting director for KC in attendance). I can't imagine he's any worse there than Melky Cabrera, who's god-awful.

Probably just an experiment, and something to get him some time there in case Cain gets hurt again (He's a bit injury prone). But intriguing, nontheless.

OBP way too low and poor-fair OPS. Looking like a completely wasted pick at this point.
Colon seems like a guy that would be a good throw in for a trade next season for a pitcher if we can't get a top FA. Colon was picked before we acquired Escobar, who is now looking liking a legit SS of the future. And assuming we still Giovatella, Colon becomes expendable. However, I suppose if you like Colon better you package Giovatella and move Colon to second base.

That just gave me a conspiracy idea. Perhaps the Royals do like the idea of keeping Colon and dumping Giovatella which is why they won't bring him up. That way he doesn't have a chance to fail at the major league level and his value stays high for outside teams looking at a potential trade. Just typing out loud and throwing it out there.

Not a bad thought. I could see it.

And duncan's right; Perez's progression might well be a good comp for Myers, whom I believe will get a cup of coffee with the club in September at the very least.

My worry with Colon is largely because he's putting up an "eh" line in a hitter's league. The vast majority of legit prospects (Gordon, Butler, Moose, Hos, Myers, etc.) have destroyed pitching while playing in AA.

There's no reason to put someone on the 40-man unless you need to. Once someone is on the 40-man roster, it can be difficult to take them off unless no one wants him.

Remember Jeremy Affeldt? Lots of talent, but infuriatingly unable to overcome blisters while pitching for us? He's now becoming known as "the king of weird injuries".

Jeremy Affeldt: King of weird injuries

Last year he cut open a hand while trying to separate frozen hamburger patties. This week? He was injured by his 4-year old son.

I don't have any data to back it up, but I've heard/read NWA is a tough hitters park for righthanded hitters and heaven for lefties. (Stats seem to back this up - Butler played his AA ball in Wichita, not NWA)

Myers obviously has overcome that, though, so it can be done.

Colon was supposed to be a polished college bat. He had played extensively with wood and performed well with it, including action with the national team. He has yet to really show that, and if he doesn't show it this season, I don't think he's going to.

Either way... incredibly encouraging start from Danny Duffy last night. I thought he had a great chance to take a step forward this season, and so far he's proving me right.

One thing to add: The Cardinals' Kolten Wong is a great example of what the Royals thought they were getting with Colon (polished college bat with good pop for a middle infielder, high floor, lower ceiling).

Of course, Wong is OPSing nearly .950 at AA Springfield, while Colon struggle to get his act together.

Depends on his defense and how that projects.

If you can get plus defense along with a .340 OBP and an OPS in the .750 range from your 2b, you're doing better than a lot of teams.

He's never going to be what was expected of him, IMO - but there's no reason he can't be an adequate 2b (kinda like Daniel Descalso is for the Cards).
