For sale (sniffle). Apricot BMW.

I've had the apricot BMW for 12 years now, and it's an awesome car. But it's been our only car for about five years, and the wife has some hobbies where she needs to carry around bigger things (art canvases? art canvassi? art canvi?). We also got a taste of the new technology with a loaner a while back and were both intrigued. I love my little roadster and it look like it's straight off the showroom floor, but it makes no sense to own two cars. So anyone want a good deal on an awesome roadster convertible?

Anyway, it's kind of my wife's turn to pick the new car, and ... my god, who can afford to buy a new car these days? She was initially hoping to buy a brand new car, which we've never done, and she liked those Lexus SUVs. However, we sat down and started pricing out what she wanted and the price came to $61,157. That's not even fully tricked out. Admittedly, it was probably 80 percent of the way to fully tricked out, but come on. $61,000 for something that's going to depreciate? If I'm going to pay that kind of coinage, I'm buying a DeLorean or something. Fortunately, my wife also shook her head and said that we're not doing that.

I think we're going back to our standard approach of buying a two-year old car with relatively high mileage of 20,000 to 40,000 miles. We're low-mileage drivers, so we tend to convert high-mileage cars to low-mileage cars over time, and the mileage will pull the price down.

I'm pretty sure we're going to go with a 2014 BMW X1. We drove one for a couple of days this summer as a loaner, and it was really nice. It'll be big enough to satisfy my wife's hobbies, and you can buy a tricked-out one in the low $30s. If I can't sell my beloved apricot Z3 outright, we'll trade it in and can probably get the cost below $30k, which seems reasonable. Anyone got a good deal on a BMW X1 for me?

But seriously, how do these companies sell $60,000 vehicles? Many of the BMWs run in that range, the Lexus SUVs run that, and don't even get me started on the Porsches. I was kind of interested in that new SUV of theirs, but I'm not going to put off retirement to buy one.

If it's going to be driven 4-5 times a year, why not rent a car for one of those 4-5 times and keep the car you love?

Dealer. Lease return, CPO. The day I picked it up, I found they put four brand new tires on it when the old ones still had some life.

I kind of like the X6, but I like my money a whole lot more. I haven't seen an X4 in person, but they seem pretty cool, too. However, a new one's pushing $60K.

German cars do not traditionally have cup holders since they think its not right to drink stuff in your car. Even somewhat recently I know many non SUVs had cup holders added on US spec models for us barbaric Americans and when they did they were wonderfully over-engineered in German fashion but not always useful. It has been changing over the years though but usually they make them so it can be hidden.

That's what we do now, and it works really well. We also have other short-term transportation that we use like Car2Go and the bus, since we live in the central city.

It makes no financial sense to buy a new car, but at some point when your only car is 14 years old you start thinking about potential hassles if it eventually starts having problems, and I want to avoid that problem. I grimace, though, because the apricot Z looks and drives like it's brand new.

As a fellow BMW owner I would recommend looking for a X3. I bet you can get one that may have a few more miles, but still not too many more, very close to the price range of a used X1. And if I may ask. What are you looking to get for your little roadster?

Do you have a picture of your current BMW? I have a friend here in KC that buys all sorts of BWMs, especially odd color ones.

You may consider casting a wider net to southern states just to see what pricing is like. Dallas and particularly Houston seemed to have a nice supply of off lease CPOs whenever I have been in the market and don't have the wear of winter and I-70 on them.

It's a tough call once it starts getting that old since you can absorb some repairs and still be ahead vs. something newer. Particularly if it has been reliable to that point but aging German cars can get bad.

I'm pondering what it's worth. The median price for my year and model is about $9,500 on cars.com. My car's probably a little above median in mileage since it's just about to hit 100,000 miles, but I'm not kidding when I say that it's showroom new. It's pretty much pristine and has had every maintenance done on schedule for the past 12 years. It looks and drives like a new car. And all kidding about apricot aside, it's also considered to be a rare color of which only a handful were made, it's a really cool color. I don't know if that helps the value at all, but an apricot Z probably doesn't come on to the market very often at all. This car's actually on web sites.

I'm thinking I'll probably ask about $10,000 for it, but for you I'd go down to $9,000.

I'm assuming you own the car outright. What's the reason you can't keep it as the insurance and maintenance costs shouldn't be a ton if it's in that good of shape like you say. Not to mention financially your obviously doing ok if you're looking to buy another BMW! I doubt my wife and I could ever share one car either.
