Jaworski rates Chiefs QB at No. 20 among NFL starters

Jaworski rates Chiefs QB at No. 20 among NFL starters

The Kansas City Star
Former NFL quarterback-turned-broadcaster Ron Jaworski ranks new Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith No. 20 among the NFL's 32 starting quarterbacks.

That's according to Jaworski's ratings on ESPN's MediaZone site, transcribed from his three-minute daily segments dubbed "Jaws' QB Countdown" on SportsCenter and NFL Live.

Smith, of course, was acquired in a trade from San Francisco this offseason, and has yet to throw a pass in Kansas City (aside from OTAs, that is).

Here are some excerpts from Jaworski's evaluation of Smith:

“A year ago, Smith was coming off his best season in the NFL, having led the 49ers to the NFC Championship. This year, he’s the starting quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs. It was a great move by (Chiefs coach) Andy Reid to acquire Smith.

“The defining element of Smith’s play is efficiency. He executes the offense the way it’s designed, and he makes very few mistakes. Last season – for the second year in a row – he was exceptional on first down. In 2012 he led the NFL in first-down passing, with a quarterback rating of 119. Much of it came off play-action, or in the case of the 49ers, hard run-action out of base personnel. There was no better play-action quarterback last season than Smith. He had a quarterback rating of over 132.

“Smith has been outstanding out of multiple tight end personnel over the last couple of seasons. No quarterback has thrown the ball more with three tight ends on the field. You don’t see that very often in today’s NFL.

“This play was beautifully designed with all three tight ends to the same side. First, look at the impact of the run-action on the two linebackers and the safety. This was hard run-action. Then you see that Delanie Walker’s vertical route occupied the corner. That left Vernon Davis matched on a safety, a safety that initially reacted to run. He had no chance on Davis’ wheel route.

“One area Smith improved in 2012 was in the pre-snap phase of the game. He was much better at the line of scrimmage checking and audibling.

“It will be interesting to see what Andy Reid does in Kansas City. Don’t be surprised if he turns Smith loose a little bit and features an up-tempo offense with an emphasis on quick throws. Remember, Alex Smith played for Urban Meyer at Utah.”

Other QB's that Jaworski has analyzed so far:

No. 32 Matt Flynn

No. 31 Jake Locker

No. 30 Kevin Kolb

No. 29 Chad Henne

No. 28 Mark Sanchez

No. 27 Christian Ponder

No. 26 Brandon Weeden

No. 25 Michael Vick

No. 24 Ryan Tannehill

No. 23 Carson Palmer

No. 22 Sam Bradford

No. 21 Josh Freeman

Why are you blaming Reid for Vick's turnovers?

Better to simply ignore me and what I say, if you disagree. I only came here to read worthwhile discussion about KC,but sadly, there has only been a small % of that so far. Although I respond to the silly mudslinging, I was hoping CP had more to offer. I'll wait a while and see if CP improves as the season and other fans arrive. If it remains filled only with the same dozen myopic haters that do nothing but rip on their own team? I'll happily move on to another KC forum.

While those are good skills to have, they are not the most important skills a QB in the NFL needs to have. That's why he's a solid/average/competent NFL QB and not an elite or near-elite NFL QB.

The things I listed are all things that are NICE for a QB to have in his pocket... but not the things that make or break a QB's ability to play QB at a high level in the league.
Hey douche wad. Don't ****ing negative rep me twice, then try to talk civily in a post. Be the douche that you have been since I have been here. I have no need to rep, pos/or neg such a worthless piece of shit.

If we don't see a LOT of play action with a threat like Charles I'll be livid...
As would I. Its the chiefs best chance at having success.

Wicked ice burn.

You don't seem to understand that I don't think Alex Smith is terrible. Just that he is extremely mediocre once the ball is actually snapped, and that the Chiefs gave up entirely too much to acquire that bundle of mediocrity.

I just wrote an entire post about this. Stupid ass. Then you neg repped me because your are an insecure little bitch with a tiny penis.
This is why his performance doesn't match his preparation. Guys like the one you describe don't win playoff games.

Now go away, troll.
No one has said that he will be anything more than that. Not even the die hard alex smith fans. In fact, myself included have said that if Andy Reid tries to do with him what he allowed and expected Mike Vick to do, this is going to be a total failure. So, eat shit and die pussy boy.

Also we were told the same things about Pioli & Matt Cassel. We were told not to question the "exec of the decade" How'd that work out for us?
No one said don't question. Some have just said can you wait and see before you all cry like a bunch of bleeding ****ing vaginas.

This team needs to stretch the field. We do not have a qb for it.

I dont see teams playing us any different than last year.there is a reason cassel and smiths career stats mirror.
Pretty much stopped reading at that point. Did kinda pay attention to the last line. You don't know the first thing about football. You are clueless further to how THE NFL VIEWS Alex Smith, and how respected his by coaches and other players view Alex Smith. Your view is a stupid myopic point of view, that really sounds like you are reading from Clays book of infinite dumbassery.

This is what I look at with Andy Reid. He was one of the main influences on Matt Hasselbeck, and on Brett Favre. He helped Donovan McNabb, no one can deny that. He made Kevin Kolb, look competent, long enough to get a ransom for him. He really helped Jeff Garcia, Garcia was awful with the Browns and Lions before pit stopping in philly before finishing up at Tampa, and Oakland. He had Foles looking pretty well. And had Vick looking good, but with a wild horse like Vick, you can only reign him in for so long before he resorts back to being a big play waiting to cause a turnover.

I don't know how this is going to play out. I know this, that every qb he has had, has had the most success in their careers, (save Garcia), playing for Andy Reid.

Again, this could totally blow up and Alex Smith was a mirage playing for Jim Harbaugh, and at the end of the season, they cut alex and move on.

Lots up for debate.

Reid being a QB guru is debatable.

Vick did have his best passing seasons under Reid.

The "experts" also thought Scott Pioli was a great GM, and that the Cassel trade was a great deal for us.

You've pretty much painted yourself into the "This expert can be trusted, this one can't corner" with your comments.

"Your expert" is the gospel, meanwhile, the ex-NFL QB who studies QB play unlike any other on TV claims your boy Smith is a below-average QB by ranking him 20th.

But let's ignore that expert.

You ****ing trolls are comical, I'll give you that.

What I do know is that Alex has a stellar work ethic. The guy gets kicked out of team HQ because there are rules involved on how long you can stay, but he gives everything and pushes others to work with him after hours. Does Mike Vick have that level of dedication? Hey, I don't know for sure, but perhaps this is part of why Vick failed under Reid later. Or maybe, Vick just didn't have the mental aptitude... hard to say... but I'm more inclined to blame Vick's failings on Vick than on Reid.

It's not even debatable. I posted something several months back that break down the passing stats of every Eagles QB NOT named Donovan McNabb.

They were ****ing awful.

Sometimes I wonder if these two are actually new members, or if they are mults - because they're spewing the exact same bullshit about Alex Smith that was said about Cassel when he was traded here.

Damn near verbatim.

Give him a chance.

He's a hard worker.

All the experts think this is great for us.

Unless you can say, "he's an elite or near-elite QB", then I don't give a shit.

Garbage out, garbage in.

Really need to get over the butthurt of Cassel. Some of you are so pitifully jaded over the past that you refuse to allow a glimmer of hope for the present and future.

If you want to quit on your team, then just walk away like a man. No point in sticking around just to cry and bleed from your anus like lil girls freshly sodomized. If you can't get on board, then your team doesn't need you and would rather toss you in the trash.

Then sit back, and have a miserable ****ing season. I really don't give a shit. I love that the mult comments always come out because I wont bend to your love affair with hating the guy. He was the best qb the chiefs could of gotten this off season, but from the way some of you ass chapped vaginas cry, I swear you would rather still have cassel or Quinn.

Just for the record ass hat. I laughed my ass off at you suckers for hiring pioli, and for trading for CASSEL. Why? Because I watched almost every pats game that year because I had drafted tom brady number one overall the year he got hurt, and picked up cassel when he got hurt. I knew the only reason he succeeded, was because he was playing for the pats, with Randy Moss, with Welker. he was garbage. Alex Smith on the other hand, knows his own limitations, hell everyone in the league knows his limitations, and the reason Alex Smith was rated 20th, was because he spent the past half of the year benched, not playing, and no one knows, not even me, if alex can actually play, or if it was just being nursed along by harbaugh and Roman. That's why he was 20th.
