Food and Drink Gates BBQ in Independence Destroyed by Fire - Page 6

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - The Gates Bar-B-Q restaurant in Independence, Mo., was destroyed in a fire early Tuesday morning.

The Independence Fire Department is on the scene investigating the cause of the fire.

Battalion Chief, Mike Ditamore said crews arrived at the scene at about 1 a.m. after an employee called in the fire. Ditamore said the employee spotted the fire around the hood system.

Crews spent an hour trying to put the fire out. Ditamore said a water pressure problem also hindered efforts, so crews had to go up a block to tap into another hydrant.

No one was hurt in the fire.

The Independence location along East 40 Highway was one of six local Gates Bar-B-Q restaurants and was less than three miles from Arrowhead Stadium.

I drove by last weekend. There was a chain link fence up around it and it looked like they hadn't touched a thing.

I'm assuming waiting on insurance. They'll rebuild, too much money there to turn down. As much as people hate to admit, it's now a chain.

Gates has sucked since the mid 90's. Suprised it continues to be a "go to" for folks who should really know fine BBQ

Gates doesn't suck. Don't be dumb. There are many cities where Gates would be the best BBQ joint in town. It's clearly not the best in KC. But KC is spoiled with some of the best BBQ in the country.

I looked around for this but only found one from 01/14 where Gates in the Dotte was had seven violations but weren't shut down.

Bryant's was shut down in 2013 for their violations. That one was pretty bad.

A good friend of mine's business is literally right next door. He said he heard the insurance hadn't settled yet, and as soon as it does, the re-building will kick in. Ollie makes a shit ton off that location, and he doesn't want to miss out on the entire baseball season.

Well damn if they havent even started to clean up and are waiting on investigations and inspections/estimates, they're not gonna be rebuilt back up in time for Royals season I wouldn't think. Maybe majority of Chiefs season.

The original smoking pit was undamaged, because, hey, fire is not going to hurt a BBQ pit. So when they finally re-build, it will be literally around the original BBQ pit.

Takes a while. LC's burgers burnt 9 months ago and just now reopened. They werent able to touch it for months either until insurance came around.

Fire damages roof of Gates Bar-B-Q in Kansas City

An early morning fire on Friday damaged the roof of a Gates Bar-B-Q Restaurant in Kansas City.

The fire is believed to have started in the ventilation system of the restaurant at 12th Street and Brooklyn Avenue, according to media reports.

The fire eventually ignited part of the roof. The extent of the damage was not immediately available, however that location was expected to be closed Friday, according to media reports.

This is the fourth fire at a Gates Bar-B-Q restaurant in about as many years.

In late 2011, a fire damaged the restaurant at 2001 W. 103rd Terrace in Leawood.

On June 19, 2013, an overnight fire heavily damaged the Gates restaurant at North 10th Street and State Avenue in Kansas City, Kan. The fire was confined to the smoke stack and attic area. It caused an estimated $100,000 in damages.

And in February, a fast-moving blaze destroyed the Gates restaurant at 10440 E. U.S. 40 in Independence. A worker was cleaning the fire pit when the fire started in the exhaust system duct work above a grill and quickly spread throughout the building.
