I would ask one of the more informed comic readers to spoiler Thanos for me a bit please. Just a basic who is he/it"?

Any one who is really interested in who Thanos is needs to read the "Infintity Gauntlet" series. It's a 7 book series, and is what this is all going to be about. It's the biggest most epic story in comic book history.
I'm pretty sure they offer the whole story in one book now. Great read. Totally worth the effort of finding.

To take this another, even more nerdier route -

This is another reason why to be pissed they just completely ****ed up the story of the Silver Surfer and Galactus in that idiotic Fantastic Four film. If you're going to take on the story of the Infinity Gauntlet in a movie, the Surfer and Galactus are crucial, iirc. Not to mention how many down the road crossover movies they could have with the Avengers and FF, and also not to mention Spider Man and the X-Men.

What could have been (and may still be, who knows).

Just saw it. I'm pretty tired, which usually makes my reactions more negative, but that was awesome. Great emotional mix. Great mix in general. It was just epic enough without being crazy out there, the characters were a blend of strength and weakness, there was great action, great personal moments, a great balance between funny moments and moments with gravitas. The stakes felt 'real' although I thought the setup at the beginning was a little bit too vague. But I've always thought the strength of Whedon's work is that he never treats his audience like they're stupid, never dumbs down what he does, and that approach works great in this film. You get introduced to everyone but without the standard long, dull exposition explaining everything to we the moron audience. He just straps us in and goes full speed, dares us to keep up, and it works great. Tonally it's the polar opposite of Nolan's dark and gritty work, but it's the same thing in spirit: a 'comic book' movie for people who don't dismiss comic books in general as being silly things for kids.

So much to like about it. I could go on and on and on....

(I should add that I saw it on a normal digital screen, no "IMAX", no 3D - glad I didn't spend the extra $$$ because I didn't need to; it was awesome without it)

Oh, and total tangent: the Prometheus trailer looked so amazing on the big screen. God, I can't wait for movie that to hit.

Fantastic 4 was made by inferior talent IMO and i believe FOX still owns the rights? Ill bet Marvel would kill to get Spidey, FF and X-Men back. Although i throughly enjoyed X-Men First Class.

I think it would be hilarious if they kept the same cast, and you had Human Torch being like Captain America's long long twin. Or something.

I never even saw Fantastic Four. It just didn't look good, plus the fact that the characters are not as much of household names to non comic book readers.

That movie looks pretty dumb to me. The first part of the trailer is cool...but then the movie turns so typical and predictable with its whole "world could end scenario because of our discovery."

Ok, so I pretty much agree with most of the things said in this thread, except Buck's "desires". Seriously, what are you smoking, guy? Put that shit down..

The movie had a pretty decent plot, albeit very similar to Transformers 3, great character development, great acting, and great action. A++ flick and a great ****ing start to the summer.

There was wayyyy more comedy than I thought there'd be. Sooo many one-liners that had the theater cracking up from start to finish. And not just from Downey Jr either. Everyone got a decent amount of screen time and everyone shined. I was particularly pleased with Black Widow and Hawkeye. I was worried they'd be lame; but they were actually pretty badass and I never felt like they robbed screen time from the big boys.

Spoiler!

All in all, this film was ****ing great and I didn't have much to bitch about. My one 'complaint' was just me wanting too much from a 2 and a 1/2 hour film that already delivered on all possible counts. I'd recommend this to anyone and its definitely deserving of all the records it's breaking.

***EDIT***
Spoiler!

Well, Marvel also need to get the rights to Spider-Man, X-Men and the Fantastic Four. The Avengers has been out for 4 days on a $200+ million budget AND IT'S ALREADY ****ING MADE MONEY. That is absolutely mind-boggling. I see no reason as to why they can't either buy out Sony and Fox completely, or come to some sort of deal and be "lent" the rights for future Avengers installments.

At the very least I want to see Luke Cage and/or Black Panther by the time they hit Avengers 3. I'm sure Black Panther and Wakanda's tech will come into play if they decide to go the Thanos route, but I'm not sure how, or if they'd even care to attempt to include Luke Cage in some way.
