Week 1: Denver will beat KC

I cannot believe week 1 is finally here and it's really odd seeing this matchup in week 1. But, considering the concerns I have for my team ... this is a good time to have KC visit Denver.

Denver's offense still has a lot to prove, in my opinion, but KC's defense could be a perfect first test. Yes, I think Gunther will improve the defense (and essentially the same players) that failed in 2003. But, it will take time. Just as it will take time for Denver's offense to get on track without Portis, Sharpe, a revamped Oline and questions at the #2 WR slot.

I don't think it will be an offensively prolific day for Denver, but it probably doesn't need to be in order to win. The strength early on, and all year, will be the defense.

KC's offense returns pretty much in tact from 2003, so they should be a high scoring unit again. In 2003, the Denver defense did a nice job against the KC offense. The 2004 Broncos' defense has improved at several positions, so I expect more of the same.

The big question is which group will bend the most without breaking - Denver's offense or KC's defense?

I think Griffin will get a majority of the carries, with limited action from Hearst and Bell. Putzier has shown flashes of greatness as a tough blocking TE and a potentially nice safety blanket for Plummer. Rod Smith is still very good, but the main concern is will Lelie finally step up or will Watts be a rookie phenom for Denver?

Additionally, will the new look Oline with Lepsis and Foster in new spots be able to provide solid running routes and pass protection from Plummer?

I think it will be a slow progression for the offense. However, when it's all said and done, I am predicting a Denver win: 27 - 21.

I think Home Field advantage will be a major player.

I also believe that the question marks at WR for KC will give them some problems, but the main area I think KC might struggle is the kicking game.

KC has a new kicker... a kicker who will be asked to play a major role at Denver, a place and a rivalry that he is not accustom to, and I see him as a possible scapegoat should the Chiefs lose in week 1.

Thoughts?

All I see is questions about the Broncos throughtout the article and the same cocky arrogance of the Broncos faithful thinking they can walk all over Kansas City regardless of their many question marks.

I worry about our new kicker missing extra points after being tired from all the kickoffs he will be doing.

Well, then you selectively read portions. I didn't mention or hint at the notion that Denver would "walk all over KC". Are you suggesting that KC has no question marks of their own? Receivers are not a question? No concerns with that defense on the road in week 1? No concerns about a new Kicker on the road in this big game?

Each team has plenty of questions... Denver's strength is defense. KC's strength is offense. It's the first game of the season in Denver...

A questionable Broncos' offense vs a questionable Chiefs' defense will decide the game. In Denver, I will give the nod to the offense. What is cocky or arrogant about that?

I will say this: if our defense gives up 27 points to Plummber and his band of nobodies then we deserve to lose, and they should be fired, immediately...

Both teams are chalked full of question marks.

Chiefs: The D - especially the MLBs, playing through a mass of injuries, the receivers, a new punter and kicker, how will the rookies play, etc.

Denver: Plummer ranking 107th out of 115 QBs in preseason, the running game, losing a wide out for 4 week at the start of the season, is Champ REALLY worth the moeny and loss of Portis, etc.

Should be interesting.

I never said that... I don't think I was particularly positive about the offense, but then again I don't think you actually read the comments I type anyway.

Exactly, BCF.

The whole point of post was about how the Broncos were going to struggle, but in the end MHM's got them winning anyways.

27 points is 27 points....I'd hate to see your prediction when you're "positive" about the offense...

A solid look at it...I don't think our kicking game will give us troubles, but I agree our defense is untested. I'm most worried about the big run. Other than that, I think our offense should be clicking already, and should have no problem with Denvers D.

As of right now, and probably heading in to week 1, i'll say its anyones game.

I'm not suggesting 27 points all by the offense ... defense and special teams can score. They didn't do much last year, but there's reason to think they could once or twice this season.

Let me get this out there ... I'm predicting a win, but I'm not expecting a pretty offensive showing from the Broncos. It's going to be a tough month of games as they get their wits about them offensively and learn to play with the new players.

I just don't see this week 1 game as a definite loss.

Preseason QB rankings won't matter much going forward. And, Madise was not a starting 3-4 WR option. No real loss there from a gameplan standpoint.
