More people have died in schools than military service members in 2018: report

Quote:
A new analysis by The Washington Post found that more people have been killed at schools so far in 2018 than have been killed while serving in the U.S. military, based on data from Defense Department news releases.

After the shooting deaths of 10 people at a Texas high school on Friday, the newspaper’s database has recorded 29 deaths in 16 different incidents in the U.S. as of Friday.

Since the publication of the Post’s article, the death toll has risen to 10 people.

During the same time period, according to Defense Department data, only 13 service member fatalities were recorded in seven incidents.
Seven of those fatalities occurred during a helicopter crash in Iraq this March. Three military casualties were not related to combat.

The Post, however, does not suggest that schools are more dangerous than combat zones. According to more recent data compiled from each of the military branches' websites, there have been more people killed while serving than in school shootings.

Still, last year, the number of fatalities was significantly greater than the number of people killed in school shootings, the paper reported.

This, in part, is because of February's mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., that left 17 people dead.

The Post noted that there are more than 50 million students in public schools but only 1.3 million members of the armed forces. Service members are still about 17 times more likely to be killed than someone in a school shooting.

My humble plan to reduce these:

1. (most important) STOP flipping saying the name(s) of the shooters. Those people started the day as a nobody, they should end the day as a nobody.

2. Secure entrances to schools with armed officers/officials - and if need be - metal detectors

3. If you want to pour money into this - pour it into studies that analyze the effects of antidepressants on our youth. (of course, this probably wont happen, given the billions big pharma donates to our politicians)

4. Stop the nonsense talk about the type of weapon - as it doesnt flippin' matter. There's an epidemic in this country with our youth and their minds......let's deal with the root-cause, not the tools they choose to be destructive.

That would be a good start.

We should all be glad more of these aren't done with a shotgun. They are far more deadly in close quarters than an AR-15. The .223/5.56 round is relatively low powered compared to most rifle calibers, and definitely low powered when compared to someone with a 12 gauge shotgun loaded with buckshot.

If there is ever going to be an honest discussion on the subject the first thing that needs to happen is the Honesty part. The left continually clamors for restrictions that are absolutely disingenuous in their rhetoric.

First of all what you all call an assault weapon or Military Grade weapon is nothing more than a Semi Automatic Rifle. You take off all of the components that make it look like a military weapon and it will still fire the exact same way with the exact same lethality. Which is way less lethal than what is carried into battle.

The number of deaths from all classes of Rifles according to FBI Stats is 374 in 2016. https://ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u.s...ta-table-4.xls

A very small fraction in the scheme of things. Considering there were 15,000 Homicides that year.

With facts like these, law abiding gun owners can take only one message from the rhetoric of the gun control crowd. Its not about the number of deaths that you are concerned with. Its about eliminating guns from civilian ownership one law at a time. At least be honest about it.

no

its the same as any other semi-auto action rifle made for 100 years available commonly

please educate yourself for ****s sake..the differences are basically cosmetic..if you take a "scary" looking ar-15 and remove all of the plastic and put wooden stock etc on it, ..voila, its a hunting rifle

im serious, take 10 minutes and watch this

Bingo. They also have combat training and the awareness of possible threats that comes with the job.

Idiotic comparison is idiotic.

Why should we take seriously anyone’s opinion on gun policy when they clearly demonstrate a lack of knowledge of the object in question?

From this one on the same topic:

"The figures for 2018 do not suggest schools are more dangerous than combat zones. After all, there are more than 50 million students in public elementary and high schools and only about 1.3 million members of the armed forces. So far in 2018, a member of the military has been about 40 times as likely to be killed as someone is to die in a school shooting, including Keller’s revised figures."

By the idiot liberals logic here, stay the hell out of Chicago as you are far more likely to be murdered there than die in the military.
Stop ****ing up the absolutely stupid ****ing narrative being pushed in the OP.

And here's another "Stat" for you. More people have been killed by drunk drivers in 2018 than all service members in a combat theater.

Ready to ban alcohol and automobiles yet?
