More people have died in schools than military service members in 2018: report

Quote:
A new analysis by The Washington Post found that more people have been killed at schools so far in 2018 than have been killed while serving in the U.S. military, based on data from Defense Department news releases.

After the shooting deaths of 10 people at a Texas high school on Friday, the newspaper’s database has recorded 29 deaths in 16 different incidents in the U.S. as of Friday.

Since the publication of the Post’s article, the death toll has risen to 10 people.

During the same time period, according to Defense Department data, only 13 service member fatalities were recorded in seven incidents.
Seven of those fatalities occurred during a helicopter crash in Iraq this March. Three military casualties were not related to combat.

The Post, however, does not suggest that schools are more dangerous than combat zones. According to more recent data compiled from each of the military branches' websites, there have been more people killed while serving than in school shootings.

Still, last year, the number of fatalities was significantly greater than the number of people killed in school shootings, the paper reported.

This, in part, is because of February's mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., that left 17 people dead.

The Post noted that there are more than 50 million students in public schools but only 1.3 million members of the armed forces. Service members are still about 17 times more likely to be killed than someone in a school shooting.

The Post WAS trying to draw the parallel, and WAS suggesting that the schools were more dangerous, and that's obvious from the title. Part of why they've had to correct the article is because they were so focused on promoting a false narrative that they didn't bother to get their facts straight before getting the story out. Lying about what they are doing is S.O.P. for the media these days.

Sounds like the military is doing a better job at protecting its people than schools which refuse to implant common sense proposals.

Then what was the point of the title?

Oh, I know! Triggering progressives so they don't read the article because they're too busy rushing to Facebook to express their OUTRAGE!!

Those first three links you quoted are the same story I posted about students saved by a resource officer with a gun. Yeah, that's a lie.

You’re such a dumb bitch. In the Texas school shooting thread, you posted that the evil MSM doesn’t report on the stories of children being saved by someone with a gun. WhawhaWhat posted these links proving that you are a liar and you ran from that thread and came to this thread to post the same bullshit lie.

Speaking of being dumb—THAT's not what you wrote in that post I quoted and responded to. Project much?

Classic projection. Learn to write what you mean. You only referred to the shootings not the reporting.

Claiming someone is lying means it's intentional. I don't read those online sources. I rarely see it in my papers or on TV ( except for right wing sources) and when they do it is not harped on repeatedly making a big deal or reporting every single one of them. Then it's quickly forgotten.

That is just ONE story. I don't see cnn, abc, nbc, msnbc, cbs talking about kids being saved by an armed person for weeks and weeks, harping on it for the same level of coverage. They only do that when there's victims.

I didn't even see WhawhWhat's post either.

LoneWolf must consider Thomas Sowell a LIAR or shall I say spreading the same lie. O.M.G. Mr. Sowell uses the word "never"!!

I'm not alone. In fact, I'm with good company sharing the same view as the very honorable Mr. Sowell, one of my favorite conservative writers.
News We Never Hear: Guns Save Lives

The defensive use of guns is usually either not discussed at all in the media or else is depicted as if it means bullets flying in all directions, like the gunfight at the O.K. Corral. But most defensive uses of guns do not involve actually pulling the trigger....

Surveys of American gun owners have found that 4 to 6 percent reported using a gun in self-defense within the previous five years. That is not a very high percentage but, in a country with 300 million people, that works out to hundreds of thousands of defensive uses of guns per year.

Yet we almost never hear about these hundreds of thousands of defensive uses of guns from the media, which will report the killing of a dozen people endlessly around the clock. The murder of a dozen innocent people is unquestionably a human tragedy. But that is no excuse for reacting blindly by preventing hundreds of thousands of other people from defending themselves against meeting the same fate.

Although most defensive uses of guns do not involve actually shooting, nevertheless, the total number of criminals killed by armed private citizens runs into the thousands per year. A gun can also come in handy if a pit bull or some other dangerous animal is after you or your child.

It may be a bigger story, but an accurate sense of proportion is often missing from the coverage.
