If the Chiefs go 8-8 or better 49ers get a 2nd round pick.

A third- or second-rounder from Kansas City, the remnant of the Alex Smith deal. Now it can be told: The second draft choice San Francisco will receive from the Smith deal will be K.C.'s second-rounder in 2014 if the Chiefs go 8-8 or better this season. It will be a third-rounder in 2014 if Kansas City is under .500 this season.

So: San Francisco will probably have first-, second- and four third-rounders next year. But if the Chiefs surprise, it'll more likely be a one, two twos and three threes. As we've seen, GM Trent Baalke is dangerous with extra picks in his hands. If Colin Kaepernick is very good, the Niners should be annual contenders for years with the picks laid out that way.

I'm not assured of anything. I think some games Alex Smith can play admirably well and other games not so much and then even other games shits his self.

We got what we got and it is up to Andy Reid to make it work. We will see one way or the other. I'm not going be happy being right if Alex Smith doesn't work out. I will actually be more happy if Alex Smith does work out than if he doesn't.

I still think he is going to shit himself.

I still won't forget the twitter reactions after the niners made the deal with the "mystery team". Every other team came out on twitter saying it wasn't us! Like a group of guys who banged a slut who got knocked up, and found out they weren't the dad.

Well, by that time, I'm sure they knew there was a deal in place with the Chiefs. I don't think it was a league wide reaction of, No way! We don't want that piece of ****! I think any one of those teams that came out saying they had no deal with Smith, would take him over their current starter.

I remember that. All the teams went into damage control to prevent a fan base riot.. well almost all of them

Yeah, because signing Kevin Kolb, or Carson Palmer, or sticking with Blaine Gabbert, are moves that should go over smooth as silk with any fan base.

Kolb was obviously a stop gap for EJ and was had for next to nothing, Gabbert is still a young player with upside that they probably assume the new regime can fix, and Palmer is an upgrade as well that was had for next to nothing as well. None of them made long term committments to those QB's like the Chiefs did by trading a 1st.

Buffalo probably went the best route. Get their stop gap guy for a year for peanuts and than turn it over to their 1st round QB. I'd prefer their situation to anyone else that was in the market for a starting QB.

Gabbert is horrible, and "stop gap" is no excuse for signing QBs that are questionable starters. Yeah, the Bills drafted EJ, a huge reach as far as I'm concerned.

I'm saying, I don't think teams were saying , it's not us, when asked if get were trading for Smith, because they thought he's awful, I'm sure they knew the Chiefs had a deal.

I know several here disagree, but I feel the Chiefs improved their QB situation more than any of the other teams that were also trying to improve that position. The price was a round or so higher than I thought it would be, but I don't know what was asked. I know Id much rather have what we have than what the Bills, Jags, Cards, Browns, and yes even the Jets have.

The Cardinals have options next year with keeping there second or third round picks not investing them in Alex Smith. They could come away with a top draft prospect next year and we still will be left with out one.

Alex Smith is gonna be better next year than any rookie QB. And if we give up a 2nd next year it would mean we made a serious push for the playoffs.
I'd consider a first year situation like that being a huge success coming off what happened last year.
