Kansas City Chiefs*scouts were paying close attention to wide receivers throughout the week. It's worth noting that the scouts and coaches were raving about bigger-bodied players and downgrading smaller, slot-receiver style players.

Basically looking to replace Bowe. That means our first pick may be Benjamin or Evans if one of them is available. If Ebron isn't there but Benjamin is, I would take Benjamin over any other receiving threat. I just wish his hands were more consistent though. He drops too many passes to be considered a high 1st round pick.

I think Robinson could be the most polished WR coming out of the draft.

Bump for Cooks, he's the Steve Smith clone I'm looking for... he's a guy who WILL get open for that half second far more often than not.

Low center of gravity, quick feet, plays bigger than he is... oh yeah, just what Axl needs.

If you are looking for slot receivers, there are a couple of guys that are giving you about the same thing in at the top this draft:

Odell Beckham, LSU; 5'11", 195 lbs.
Brandin Cooks, Oregon State; 5'10", 185 lbs.

Beckham is the most polished. He's got great hands and is an excellent route runner. He's also the most versatile of the three in that he's a superb punt and kick return man. He won the Paul Hornung Award this past season given to the best all-around football player in college.

Cooks is an excellent receiver and has a knack for breaking dudes off at the ankles, especially on deep routes and when the ball is in his hands. He is your Biletnikoff Award winner given to the best receiver in college.

Both are superb football players that have near identical skill sets. This one is like choosing between Eric Berry and Earl Thomas in 2010. I don't think that you are going to go wrong with either player. Both players upside is Steve Smith, though I don't know if either have the absolute fearless, toughness that made Smith so special.

Both are most likely first rounders and one should be available when the Chiefs pick.

Following them is a trio of slot type receivers that are, again, near identical in skill set and physical makeup:

Robert Herron, Wyoming; 5'9", 195 lbs.
Josh Huff, Oregon; 5'11", 210 lbs.
Bruce Ellington, South Carolina; 5'9", 195 lbs.

All three are very fast, stocky receivers with a lot of muscle. I though Herron was one of the standouts at the Senior Bowl. Ran really nice routes and showed good speed. I watched a couple of the Cowboys games this season and he really stands out on the football field.

So with all the talent in the draft do you even bother signing a free agent wr?

I appreciate the very informative post, but if this Cooks kid is as talented as he looks then I dont see why he would have to be relegated to the slot only... the guy I compare him to, Steve Smith, was a true #1 because he was able to play bigger than he is.

I wouldn't unless you could get someone like Riley Cooper, who is young enough with good hands and size, for relatively cheap.

As per Pestilence's report, if the Chiefs are looking at the bigger receviers, and because of the depth of this draft, you could get a guy like Ole Miss' Donte Moncrief in the third round, Rutgers Brandon Coleman around 3/4 or a guy like BYU's Cody Hoffman in the 4/5 range, that's nuts. All three guys are superb receivers. (Hoffman is as plug and play as you will find and has the best hands of any guy in this draft, and the upside with both Moncrief and Coleman are ridiculous. I was reading somewhere that one NFL scout thought that Moncrief might actually end up being the best receiver in this class when it's all said and done.)

And I think a guy like Texas' Mike Davis gives you everything that you are going to get in USC's Marquise Lee, and Davis should be around in the 3/4 range.

If they can't come out with a #2 opposite of Bowe with either their first, third or fourth round pick in this draft, they are doing something wrong. Personally, I'd love to see them with a guy like Cooks or Beckham that would immediately be both your slot and return guy in the same vein as Green Bay's Randall Cobb and then get a huge upside guy like Moncrief or Coleman a bit later. Win-win.

He is not like Steve Smith. Closer to a Tavon Austin, just not as fast. Cooks does not make many plays going up for the ball like Beckham Jr can; Beckham is easily the better jump ball guy and has a skillset that is a lot closer to Steve Smith than Cooks has.

Disagree 100%, what I watched was VERY Smith-like, Austin is an inch shorter atleast and gives up ten pounds... thats no comparison at all.

I'll admit to only having watched Cooks highlight reel, but he made several plays in traffic against bigger guys in it, and his cutting ability and quicks were off the charts.

Beckham is definitely intriguing as well, he's a notch bigger but also a step slower and not as quick as far as I can tell... I would be fine with either, but am of the definite opinion that the guy quickest in and out of his breaks is the best fit for Alex Smith.

I'm a huge Brandin Cooks fan, so I wouldn't be terribly upset with taking him.

Ideal situation is one in which we trade down from 23 to say, 29/30ish range, add a 3 rounder (or 2nd would be a coup) and take Cooks. That would allow you to take another potential day 1 starter in round 3.

I would much rather take Kelvin Benjamin over any of the 6' or less Wrs. Long strider like Johnson, Jones, Gordon, etc who has deceptive speed and one of the highest ceilings of all receivers in this draft. That said, idk if he will make it to pick 23.

Ignore OldSchool. He's a dumbass. Cooks made plays going up for the ball all the time. He is nothing like Tavon Austin, other than the speed. I still say Cooks is more like Percy Harvin as a playmaker all over the field.
