NO HAKIM FOR CHIEFS: Vermeil said

Posted on Fri, Apr. 29, 2005

Chiefs to get first look at picks

By ADAM TEICHER

The Kansas City Star

The Chiefs will breathe much easier this morning after watching former Texas linebacker Derrick Johnson on their practice field for the first time.

There's always a sense of relief when they see with their own eyes that their first-round draft pick can walk and chew gum at the same time.

Seeing Johnson and all of their newest players is one of the reasons for the three-day mini-camp that begins today at the Chiefs' Truman Sports Complex practice facility. The Chiefs will conduct some playbook instruction, practice a little and send their rookies on the way.

NFL rules prohibit the rookies from participating again until May 16.

The Chiefs staged such a camp the weekend after the draft last year for the first time. Coach Dick Vermeil was so pleased with the results that they're doing it again.

“We felt it helped the rookies come into our (off-season practices) and mini-camp much further along than the way we did it in the past,” Vermeil said. “It's part of the process now. It gives them better awareness of what things are going to be like.”

Part of the time on the field will be spent on drills designed to test the rookies' athletic skills and making sure the qualities they thought they saw on a player's college video are real.

“We want to see that,” defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham said. “We want to see athletic movement. We want to see the ability to adjust to coaching. We want to see the ability to retain the things we teach them in the classroom.

“The tendency is to get real excited when you see some things they can do. There's a tendency to upgrade guys more than they should be. You've got to remember they don't play the game in shorts. But this is a building block.”

Johnson will be a focus for the Chiefs this weekend. They hope to get him ready to claim a starting spot in time for the Sept. 11 season opener against the Jets at Arrowhead.

But the Chiefs don't necessarily need to see his athletic skills. They've already put him under their microscope before making him their first pick last weekend.

“The things he will be able to do,” Vermeil said, “won't surprise us.”

• NO HAKIM FOR CHIEFS: Vermeil said he talked with free-agent wide receiver Az-Zahir Hakim, who was recently released by the Lions, and told him the Chiefs would not attempt to sign him.

“I'd love to have Az,” Vermeil said. “The problem is, as I told Az, is that I already have Dante Hall. I also have another receiver who's not a big guy in Samie Parker. I just don't have room for another small wide receiver. I just wanted to visit with and explain that to him.”

Hakim played for Vermeil with the Rams in the late '90s.

• VANCE DEAL: Guard Forest Vance has agreed to terms of a two-year contract with the Chiefs, president/general manager Carl Peterson said Thursday. Vance, a 6-foot-4, 298-pounder, was a rookie free agent with Green Bay in 2004. He was released before the start of the regular season.

Ah well. Not really a huge loss. As DV said, we have enough small wideouts. Ill bet Az is disappointed though. Heh.

Az's penchant for putting the ball on the turf doesnt mesh well with the Chiefs generally "turnover free" offense either.

Kennison loses a few that he shouldnt on fumbles, and thats pretty much our only turnovers aside from the 10-12 or so interceptions that Trent throws per year. Priest might lose one or two, but those Priest fumbles are few and far between.

Id love to see someone replace Johnnie Morton though. If not from the outside, then from the receivers we have already.

Morton could come in on those possession type downs, on your 3rd and 4 or 5 maybe, kinda like Ricky Proehl does for the Panthers, but in your general schemes where you want to stretch the field, Id like to see more of Samie Parker. Morton just doesnt have the speed we need.

Kennison only caught 7 more passes than Morton last year, but ended up with 301 more yards and 5 more TDs.

He makes about 300k less than Tony G in salary, yet Tony caught 47 more passes than he did.

We better see at the very least, a restructure of the payout for Morton's services.

I guess Morton isn't going anywhere.

BS, Morton restructures or is out after June 1st... No way we take his 3 mill salary hit this year... I bet Carl has already planned the Salary cap around Johnny to where he needs to re do his deal or get the f out of town...

Dick is big on Sammy, Dante will be back, Kennison is the man and we have a few WR that we had last year that will fight it out for #4 and #5 and PS:

To name a few:

Horn
Cro
McIntyre
Booth
Bo
Wilson TE/WR

I think we are ok... we dont need a #1 Wr right now for this offense, if we feed the ball to RB (not alot last year) and TE we should be ok with this WR core...
