They have one of the top farm systems. Ellsbury is gone but his replacement is in AAA. Drew may be back if not Bogaerts will move back to SS, his natural position. Ortiz is a question mark as is 1st base but as is the Sox are in a decent position.

Congrats Cards fans, this was a great WS. I have a feeling we may see each other another time or two in the near future. All those young arms are going to something to deal with!

The Red Sox always have a top rated farm system, but the hype has historically outpaced the production of the players.

It's not that the Red Sox are in bad position, but they'll likely do what they've done for the last fifteen years--find a new group of mercenaries to fill the holes on the roster.

Just anecdotal evidence like that defense story. He's a Boras client. They always go to who pays the most.

The Cardinals are clearing off $40 million in salary this offseason. We have more major league ready players than we have roster spots. It's time to turn a bunch of quarters into a dollar.

Normally our farm system is decent, but I don't know the current state of things. Ellsbury is probably gone, and Drew I don't see as a great loss. Bogaerts moves to SS and Middlebrooks back to third, so that's fine.

1st base is a question mark as well. Napoli or someone else.

Again, not sure this team is built for sustained, long term success, but for now, I'll just enjoy the championship.

Probably because we won 60 something games last year and were a complete mess.

IMO they have to re-sign Beltran. He is the most clutch hitter we have in postseason. With the uncertainty around Craig, its a much needed insurance policy. It would allow Matheny to give more rest to Craig and Beltran while having potent bats in the lineup. Our bench is pretty weak outside of the glovework of Descalso and maybe Shane Robinson. It would also be a boost against AL teams when we have the DH.

Are you kidding? After the debacle of the end of the Terry Francona era and the travesty of the Bobby Valentine era, just about everyone figured to be happy if this team was likable, competitive, and--best case scenario--over .500 by the end of the season. It's a team of old guys, castoffs, role players, injured guys, and one bona-fide hitter (Ortiz) and a closer in Uehara who was their 4th option. Aside from Lester there's not a reliable stud in the pitching bunch. They batted .211 in this Series but, as they've done all year, they had ridiculously timely hitting. As a group they overachieved big time. This was lightning in a bottle and I expect them to fall well back to earth next season but who cares, I'll gladly take this unexpected title.

Agreed that you guys really need Beltran. Just as a casual fan, there weren't many guys in that lineup that worried me. Beltran was the main one. I don't think that's a bat you can afford to lose.

I know Hamas, ever Cardinal youngster is a future star, you've told us that. Esp Wong. Maybe some day he'll learn how to (a) hit and (b) not get picked off.

That said the Cardinals pitching staff is in better long term position than any other team in baseball with the exception perhaps of Oakland or Tampa.

For the season Cardinals hitters put up the following offensive value:

wRC+
Holliday: 148
Carpenter: 147
Adams: 136
Craig: 135
Molina: 134
Beltran: 132

Red Sox:

Ortiz: 152
Napoli: 129
Nava: 128
Victorino: 119
Pedroia: 115
Ellsbury: 113

The Red Sox had the best hitter in the series. The Cardinals had the next five best hitters (technically six, but Adams is really a platoon player). Short series will lead to fluky shit like what happened over the last week.

Show me a post where I talked about how Wong is a future star. You dumbass, I'm more down on Wong as a long term player than any other Cardinal fan that posts here. If you're going to try to troll, at least get the ****ing basics right.
