Rank of total attempts
1st
2nd
3rd
17th
9th

Without percentages, that stat is pretty meaningless... for the top 3, it just shows the teams that pass a lot also have a lot of attempts under 10 yards. It also shows the Browns and Chiefs attempt more short passes than the other 3.

Difference between #1 and #5 is 3 pass attempts per game % wise. 3.125 if you want to get picky.

Those 3 attempts per game can mean a lot.

Maybe an extra FG or even TD.

The margins in the NFL are slim.

Not in certain QB's cases. It just means extra FAIL for your enjoyment!

Attempts over 10 yards...

Stafford -- (338 - 223) / 8 = 13.125/game (31%)
Manning -- (333 - 229) / 8 = 13/game (31%)
Dalton -- (332 - 226) / 9 = 11.78/game (32%)
Browns -- ((96+195) - 225) / 8 = 8.25/game (23%)
Smith -- (286 - 221) / 8 = 8.125/game (23%)

5 attempts/game seems fairly significant as far as at least keeping the defense honest... once every two or three drives (it's not often about the extremes).

For attempts over 15 yards he's #38 in the league.

For Yards Per Attempt he's #29 in the league, and that's even with Jamaal Charles getting the 2nd most YAC in the league.

You mean YAC for RBs or for all receivers?

You mean Charles is the 2nd in the NFL among all players at YAC, or just among RBs?

You are expecting that we will throw it even more than we are, to get to 5 we would have to throw it 50 more times over the next 8 games to stay on Stafford's pace. At Smith's current pass attempt rate per game its 3.1.

You think we should pass 40 times a game from here on out?

the interesting thing is that people tried to bring up # of short attempts to defuse this idea about deep passing.

Uh, what?

Everyone in the NFL throws a lot of short passes.

The difference between the best offenses and the rest is the ones who dial up the down field throws more often.

The interesting point is deep passing ability does not correlate to winning unless your defense sucks.
