Used car

Let's say you're buying a used car. Would you rather have new tires on that car or would you rather have the $500 to go select whichever brand of tires you prefer?

Poll in a moment.

The tires aren't actually bald but they're within a couple thousand miles of being replaced. They are clearly in need of replacement. There are several trains of thought here. If nothing else, I'll have some reasons to explain why I chose not to replace them if that's the route I choose.

Used is an option, jsp. I'm just not sure I want to go to the trouble.
Do you still have that pic of Iowanian's sports car? I want to check the condition of the tires.

Which was another consideration I had prior to starting the thread.

I really wanted to put on new tires. I think it's a key selling point. I don't think too many people want to drop $10k+ on a vehicle and go spend a few hours tire shopping. But I can see the other side of the argument as well.

Use the the worn tires a sales feature Phil. If they are worn evenly, show that to the perspective buyer. Then offer them the option of the discount or you putting on their choice of tire for them.
As far as used tires go, the cost of mounting and balancing in relation to the tire cost is high. You would also run the risk of adding a problem tire, one that is detrimental to the sale.

The tires have even wear patterns. I'll need to use that for sure.

If its in that price range.....spring for the new set of rubber.

Daddy will want his baby girl to be driving something with good tires when he sends her off to be a LAX cheerleader at Duke this fall.

Brand is important to me. I'll never own another set of BF Goodrich tires after my family got stranded when their shitty tires with only 12K miles on them fell apart when we were in the middle of nowhere in Wyoming a couple years ago.

You can also tell the buyer that if they get new tires, they can use the old ones for many purposes, such as:

1. If you put the tire around a political dissident and then set it on fire, it's a great way to set an example. Just ask the South Africans.

2. Tree + rope + tire = hours of swinging fun

3. You can set tires on fire during a riot to create a lot of smoke and smell, and that really gets your message across.

4. Tie the tire to a rope, and tie the rope around your waist. Now you can run and get in shape just like Albert Lewis used to do.

5. You can put a small child inside the tire and roll it down a hill. The child thinks it's fun, and it's a great way to rid yourself of a whiny child.

6. In World War II, rubber was a rationed item. Store the old tires in your attic, and they'll be quite valuable some day if Germany invades Poland again.

Kind of a Catch-22. It's tough to sell a used car with bald tires but, for me, if I see an ad with "new tires" listed, I wonder if they are trying to hide something.

Personally, I would rather have the $500 off and get my own tires than buy a car with brand new cheap tires, which is what most people selling a used car are going to do.
