Why Geno Smith fell in the draft

I've seen a couple other posts about this... but this probably deserves it's own thread considering how many hours we've wasted arguing about the guy. This is the first article I've seen theorizing why Geno fell in the draft. Time will tell whether it's accurate.

On April 23, Smith, his agents, some family members and several friends gathered for dinner in New York in advance of the draft, a gathering confirmed by a family member. At one point, everyone around the table stood to give a toast to celebrate the evening.

Smith went last, thanking everyone and declaring that entire group – his agents included – were a "family" that would stay together his entire career, if not the rest of his life, the sources said. Smith, who at one point was expecting to be the No. 1 overall pick and at least a top 10 selection, has big plans for his career. Smith, according to the sources, hopes to emulate players such as Peyton Manning, Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers, putting himself cut above the rest of the quarterback fray.

The problem is that NFL types see a guy who, right now, doesn't understand how to get there.

"His biggest problem is that he doesn't know what he doesn't know," said a league executive, who spent extensive time assessing Smith before the draft.

"I'm not sure he knows how to take instruction because he pretty much wouldn't listen or talk to our coaches … he's talented. He can sling it, he can fit it into tight spots, he can do a lot of things and I think he wants to be good. But you can't tell him anything right now. He's tuned out because he thinks he's got it all down."

One possible factor in Smith dropping to the second round is a concern about leadership.

"He doesn't have much presence, not much of a leader," said another league executive, who spent a great deal of time studying Smith before the draft. "I don't think he's a bad person, but that's not enough to be a quarterback in this league."

Two sources indicated that when Smith went on some visits to teams, rather than interact with coaches and front-office people, he would spend much of his time on his cell phone. Instead of being engaged with team officials, he would be texting friends or reading Twitter or a number of other distracting activities.

"All these other players who were in there were talking to the coaches, trying to get to know people and he was over there by himself," one of the sources said. "That's not what you want out of your quarterback."

Both sources indicated that Florida State's E.J. Manuel, who was selected ahead of Smith at No. 16 overall by Buffalo, was far more impressive in terms of his personality and maturity.

"Manuel gets it, he gets the whole big picture of what it takes to lead a team," one of the league executives said.

By Sunday, Smith was being convinced by other friends that it was the fault of his agents that he slipped so much in the draft, according to one of the sources.

"Right now, he's blaming everybody but himself and he has some buddies around him who are telling him that same thing," the source said.

while you are at it, bump the draft order this year and the assesment by 32 GM's coaches etc that said otherwise ... the best that one can tell is that the Chiefs didn't miss on any real good QB's.

IIRC there had been a lot of bad QBing going on there. IIRC Flacco was a must, that would make him not a reach, like Geno would have been at 1.1 like most wanted, because they had Kyle Boller, Todd Bouman and Troy Smith at QB and like I said they thought Grbac was going to solve their QB problems at one time.

Flacco was drafted #18th overall Albert was the #15th

Both Mel Kiper Jr. and Mike Mayock were high on Flacco, believing he was the second best quarterback in the class behind Matt Ryan and a first-round pick. Kiper told Bill Ordine of the Baltimore Sun Flacco went from “intriguing” to the “real deal” during his senior season. [Baltimore Sun, Apr. 17, 2008]. He wrote for ESPN that he thought the Falcons might trade back to get him later in the first round (Ravens ended up doing that).

Joe Flacco has been hovering around my Top 25 Big Board all season, and this week he cracked the board. Flacco’s size and arm strength are the best in this year’s quarterback class, and he really impressed teams during his individual workouts. Although he’s not tremendously mobile, Flacco moves well enough in the pocket. He also appears to be extremely coachable and a quick study.
Similar to what Cleveland did last year with Brady Quinn, don’t be surprised if the Atlanta Falcons try and trade back into the latter stages of the first round to draft Flacco.

Mayock was quite impressed with what Flacco brought to the table physically. On the Apr. 27, 2008 edition of NFL Networks’ Total Access, he said that Brady Quinn was unfit to carry Flacco’s jock.

“I had some people make comments to me last night, ‘Why did they go back to [the] 18[th-overall pick]? Did they really need to get [Flacco] like that? Come on, how good a football player is this guy?’
Let me put it in perspective: Brady Quinn — everybody thought was a top-10 pick last year — Brady Quinn, as far as physical skill set, can’t carry his jock.”

Flacco was viewed as a product of draft hype. He was not a prized recruit out of high school, originally enrolling at Pittsburgh. He played for an FCS school, Delaware. Sports Illustrated termed his Senior Bowl performance “disastrous.” Many were skeptical. Some felt he was a product of playing against inferior competition. Some were willing to grant him the benefit of the doubt on that, but were concerned about his experience being primarily out of the shotgun (which feels sooo 2008). If there’s a greater concern about Flacco, it’s how he took his snaps primarily out of the shotgun. Because the Ravens aren’t likely to move him away from center most of the time, he’ll be the one making the adjustment. Dropping back can’t be followed by falling down, or that’ll become an issue real fast. But it’s not like he’s never done it.

Some viewed Flacco as a project, unable to help the Ravens immediately. Toni Grossi wrote the following in his immediate assessment of the Ravens’ 2008 Draft. [Cleveland Plain Dealer, Apr. 29, 2008]

By the time Flacco is ready to win – not just play – Ray Lewis, Ed Reed and other Ravens star defensive players may be sitting in the NFL Network studio chairs.

Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel felt Flacco could not be a success because he was tall, taller than almost any other “above average” quarterback. Here’s your gem quote from that article. [Milwaukee Journal Sentinal, Apr. 19, 2008]

“I’ve got a problem with Flacco,” a personnel director for an AFC team said. “You know why? He’s 6-6. I don’t know why it is but history tells you they’re not going to be any good.”

I was expecting this and figured people like you would read just the beginning and then take off with it before getting to the point of the article. Its no suprise you would think what you posted was the point of it.
