AMC readies "Walking Dead" spinoff series
AMC readies 'Walking Dead' spinoff

September 16, 2013, 1:23 p.m. "The Walking Dead" is set to begin its fourth season on AMC next month, but the network is already looking ahead to 2015, when it's expected to launch a spinoff series to the biggest drama on cable. On Monday, AMC announced a companion series to the original. "Walking Dead" creator Robert Kirkman will serve as executive producer on the new series alongside Gale Anne Hurd and David Alpert. While no plot details have been divulged yet, the new series looks likely to approach the zombified world from an entirely different angle. In a statement, AMC President and General Manager Charlie Collier said, "We look forward to working with Robert, Gale and Dave again as we develop an entirely new story and cast of characters. It's a big world and we can’t wait to give fans another unforgettable view of the zombie apocalypse." So this means no Rick, Glenn, Daryl or little baby Judith? Not necessarily, but it definitely appears that the new series will attempt to establish its own identity separate from "Walking Dead." As Kirkman himself stated, "I couldn't be more thrilled about getting the chance to create a new corner of 'The Walking Dead' universe. The opportunity to make a show that isn't tethered by the events of the comic book, and is truly a blank page, has set my creativity racing." Along with "Better Call Saul," taking the Saul Goodman character from "Breaking Bad," the as-yet untitled "Walking Dead" series will be the second spinoff series from AMC. The new season of "Walking Dead" premieres Oct. 13. |

A much better idea than trying to stick to the source material and ****ing it up.

So BrBa and TWD spinoffs. What about a Mad Men spinoff?
I'm not sure what I'd want to see there. Maybe Roger Sterling coming up as a younger man. |

And really, the 'universe' would be almost limitless. You could start all the way back with Bert Cooper starting up Sterling Cooper in the 20s with Sterling Sr. The problem is that Matthew Weiner wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole and AMC would never give it the budget that Mad Men got. As such, it would end up a cut-rate version of Mad Men with actors that aren't going to be the actors we have come to really like in their respective roles. So ultimately, that's probably not a very good idea. Maybe your narrower concept is a better one in that you could just go back to maybe 1940 or so and just have Slattery color his hair to give him a younger appearance. Can Slattery/Sterling carry a show, though? Is there enough depth to the character? In the end, Mad Men doesn't work without Weiner and AMCs massive budget for it, though. A spinoff can only hurt the brand.

Hell on Wheels has been really good this season. Aside from the head-scratching "stick ball" episode.
