2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread

2012 Slogan: Our Time

A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year
(from Great Expectations)

An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division
(from alnorth)

With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

Quote:
If you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

If there's good news here, it's that a whole slew of starters-Duffy, Lamb, Odorizzi, Monty, maybe Ventura-could converge on KC by next June.

Verdugo has 38 innings, 20 walks, 37 strikeouts, a whip of 1.15, and an era of 2.82 through 7 starts.

If he didn't have the strikeouts I'd be concerned about the walks, but he does so I'm not.

Montgomery has 39 innings, 18 walks, 28 strikeouts, a whip of 1.53, and an era of 4.35 through 7 starts.

Granted Monty is 2 years younger, but maybe that is why Verdugo is ready for his shot and Monty isn't.

This June would have been better.

Now we are basically assured that we will see NONE of our pitching prospects anytime this season before September since there will be fear of more injuries.

Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on your point of view), this little window of expected success may be enough to tear down what’s left of Royals fans.

You can’t suck for 2 1/2 decades, have horrible ownership that couldn’t make it more clear they have no motivation to win, then pin all your hopes on one youth-movement (which is, what, the 14th youth movement since our last playoff appearance?) and then have the team face-plant.

I’m about ready to ignore this franchise until we actually MAKE the playoffs. That's right, game 1 scheduled and set for all the world to see. No more excuses, no more “next year”, no more pointing fingers and blaming the Yankees for all our problems.

It was from a Jeff Passan radio interview on Petro a few weeks back.

Boras' idea of a fair long-term contract was not in line with any baseball team's idea of a fair long-term contract for Jackson (he visited a lot of folks, but signed long-term with none of them).

Dayton Moore must fix anything because if they don't win next year, he likely is fired.

The FA pitching market for 2013 could not have come along at a better time for him (or the franchise).

Cole Hamels (not happening, but still the headliner)
Zack Greinke (still unlikely)
Dan Haren ($15 million team option)
Shaun Marcum (local guy, doable)
Edwin Jackson (doable)
Gavin Floyd ($9 million team option, otherwise doable)
Brandon McCarthy (very doable)
Anibal Sanchez (Doable, my favorite option. Offer him $15 million/per, and he's yours)
Ervin Santana (doable)
Joe Saunders (doable)

They showed with Greinke/Meche a willingness to spend on premium pitching. If they spend at that level in this FA market, that is likely enough to land a pretty nice pair of starting pitchers.

We could be A LOT worse off right now than Mendoza. Except on the other end of the spectrum is that Vin Mazzaro is starting. I'd like to see us bring up Odorizzi or Monty just to get them a few innings in the majors, Although I understand them not wanting to throw them to the Rangers RIGHT now.

How about KC actually spend some god damn money on a legit veteran for once? Our rotation was absolute garbage on paper, let's not act like it wasn't obvious we needed upgrades.

We had a massive hole in the rotation, Edwin Jackson was out there, and we were diving through the garbage bin instead. Pay up for once to show at least a passing commitment to being average.

Glass is content to keep the money, Moore does his bidding, and KC fans continue to defend it.

If you want to talk about CJ Wilson or Yu Darvish or one of the other FA pitchers from the past offseason, that's cool. It was a pretty weak market beyond those guys (Next best was probably Buehrle, and there was a BIG dropoff after him). They gambled on Sanchez, and it hasn't worked. If they'd gambled on, say, Erik Bedard instead, it would look a lot better.

Jackson just wasn't an option. All I was saying.

Moore has shown he will push the payroll higher for starting pitching in the past. He needs to do it in this offseason. With the plethora of proven starters that are going to be out there, there's no excuse for him not to.
